Overview
Chongqing is located in the southwestern part of China.
Initially a city of Sichuan, the southwestern part of China, it became a self-governed city and the world’s largest city in 1997 by merging with the neighboring city.
The city is located where Chang Jiang and Jialing meet, and the town sits in the inclined land between two rivers with the shape of a peninsula stretching from the west. It became an open port area in 1876 in accordance with the Zhifu Treaty, and served as the capital where the Chinese Nationalist Party established agencies from 1938 to 1945 during the Sino-Japanese War. Although it was located 2,400km away from Chang Jiang, water transportation was developed thanks to the large size of the river, and it also served as the transportation hub where Chianui Railway and Chianzhen Railway meet. The rich transportation infrastructure enabled the collection and distribution of goods, promoting active trading. The city was rich in coal from the adjacent Mt. Jianryiang and iron ore from Chijang River, as well as diverse minerals, natural gas and agricultural products, which provided a favorable environment in which steelmaking, power generation, machinery, chemistry, spinning and other industries could develop. As a result, the city emerged as the largest industrial center in the southwestern part of China. The provisional government of Korea was established here when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule. The city has many higher education facilities, including Chongqing University, as well as diverse cultural facilities, Beibei Hot Springs and Pipasan Park.
As the largest industrial city in the southwestern part of China, Chongqing produces 25% of the industrial production volume of Sichuan, the neighboring area. The industry of Chongqing will develop further, facilitating the economic growth of the entire southwestern region. When the new economic triangle is completed with the three gorges dam connecting Chongqing, Chengdu and Yichang, low-cost power will be supplied by the dam, and transportation to Wuhan and Shanghai will become more convenient.
