Overview

Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal, India.
The former name of Kolkata is Calcutta. Although it was renamed Kolkata, the traditional name of the region, in 1995, it is still better-known as Calcutta. It is located about 130km upstream from the Hooghly River, the distributary of the Ganges River. The deep and wide river enables the entrance of ocean-going vessels to what is India’s second-largest trade port following Mumbai.
Until the 17th century Kolkata had been a small fishing village, but English merchants built the base in 1590, and the William fortress six years later. Kolkata served as the capital of the nation while India was under the colonial rule of the East India Company, and continued to serve as the capital after India became a colony of England, until 1912 when New Delhi was built.
Unlike Mumbai, which had a similar structure to western cities, and Delhi, which consisted of the old town and the new town, Kolkata had the Indian and Western components side-by-side. The city still has prefectures, Victoria Memorials and Islam towns.
The downtown area has many ship repair shops, rubber plants, rice mills, paper factories, commodity plants and print shops. The town that developed along the riverside serves as the industrial hub. The industrial complex originally focused on fiber industries, such as jute, cotton and silk, but also emerged as an advanced metal and machinery engineering hub as underground resources were developed in the western part of West Bengal. Kolkata is a major exporter of jute, tea, leather, rubber and flax, and has active commercial areas serving the Ganges River valley and Assam.
