Overview
Manila is located on Luzon Island, which is about 1,100 km southeast of Hong Kong. It has served as the political, economic, social and cultural hub of the nation for four centuries, and is currently an international port and the foundation for the industrial development of the nation. Manila and its neighboring cities and self-governing areas make up Metro Manila. Manila is situated on a low, narrow triangular plain at the side of Pasig River, along the eastern coast of Manila Bay, which connects Manila with the sea through a 19 km-wide canal to the southwest. Pasig River flows from Laguna de Bay, a large lake in the southeast, to Manila Bay in the northwest. Manila is favorably located as a port, as it is safely located in the interior of Manila Bay, easily connected to inland farming areas through the river, and relatively close to the Asian continent. It has a tropical climate consisting of a rainy season from June to November and a dry season from December to May. The average annual temperature of 27℃ is maintained around the year.
Following its destruction during the Second World War, Manila has achieved rapid economic growth. The city is active in publishing, printing, food processing and diverse manufacturing industries such as fiber, paint, solutions, aluminum, rope, shoes, tobacco, coconut oil, soap and lumber production. As the center of commerce and finance of the Philippines, the city serves as the home for major banks, government headquarters, private insurance companies and the Manila Stock Exchange. North Manila Port, a domestic port, is located at the northern side of Pasig River; the densely-populated Tondo, and South Manila Port, the international port, are located at the southern side of the River. Malacanang Palace, the president’s official residence, is located in San Miguel, and Intramuros is famous for its historic remains, including San Agustin Church, which was built in the 16th century. The architectural style of Manila has been influenced by the US, Spain, China and Malaysia.
As the educational center of the nation, Metro Manila has a wide range of higher education institutes, including the National University of the Philippines (headquarters located in Quezon City), Manila University and University of the Philippines College of Engineering. The city also has the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the heart of the nation’s performing arts, as well as theaters like Folk Arts, the historic Metropolitan and the outdoor theater of Rizal Park. The city also has the national library, the national museum, the national science and technology research institute, the geology museum attached to the Mining Bureau, and libraries that hold official documents such as Kamainilan Library (Manila). Metro Manila operates buses, jeepney (small buses made from jeeps) and taxis. Railroads connect Manila with the northern part and the southeastern part of Luzon Island, but there is no railroad available at the port area. Ships and flights are the best options for travel between islands or abroad.
The city consists of a new town and an old town. The entire city is painted in white, and most of the buildings and walls are white. The city is a cozy, small place, with no high buildings except for the hotels.
The neighboring areas are known as the Henequen farms. F. Montejo, the Spanish conquistador, built the city on the site of an ancient Mayan city in the middle of the 16th century. The city is called “the City of All White ,” as the grand cathedral and the mansion of Montejo still remain, and the city has beautiful streets surrounded by white walls.
At the tip of the Yucatan peninsula, the eastern part of the city, the famous resort destination and marine sports spot, Cancun, is located. Chichen Itza, the Mayan site with the mysterious pyramid, is located in the west.
Tulum, the Mayan site, is located at the coast halfway between Merida and Chichen Itza, and the neighboring areas are full of diverse marine resorts. The archaeological museum holds numerous remains, and the city is also well known for Yucatan University, which was founded in 1922.
