City Overview
MUnlike many other US cities, which were established during the gold rush, the city of Anchorage came into being in 1914, when the Alaska Railroad established its headquarters there.
Since the World War II, the city has been one of the most important air bases in the US, and is now referred to as the crossroads of the world's sky, linking the Alaskan interior, the US mainland, the western part of North America, Northern Europe and the Far East.
With its port that was built in 1961, Anchorage has been able to supply oil and natural gas from its abundant reserves. Now blanketed with high-rise buildings, the city is located near Mount McKinley.
Its beautiful scenery attracts an increasing number of tourists around the year. In 1964, a destructive earthquake struck the area, causing many fatalities and costly damages.
