City Overview
The history of the city of Philadelphia began when Swedish immigrants formed the first European settlements in 1636, but it was not until William Penn arrived with British immigrants in 1681 that the development of the city began in earnest. By the time the Revolutionary War came to an end, the city had become the largest stronghold for the Revolutionary Army. In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted at the Pennsylvania State House (now called Independence Hall). In the early 19th century, the city was the largest city in the US. The city of Philadelphia still plays an important role in the areas of culture and education, and is home to the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Rodin Museum, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Franklin Institute and the University of Pennsylvania.
