  • Geographical characteristics: Alexandria, the second-largest city in Egypt, is famous for the Nile Delta and for
                 Egypt's largest port on the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Major industries: The city houses 1,900 companies, including 591 textile businesses, 322 food businesses, 318
            engineering businesses, 281 chemical businesses and 136 paper businesses. It serves as Egypt’s
            hub of transportation and maritime trade.
  • Other information:
    1) Educational institutions: 27 higher education institutions (combined student body: 165,000)
      In Egypt, about 40 percent of the population is illiterate. Private schools are known to provide
        better educa  tion than public schools.
    2) Cultural and entertainment facilities: Cultural heritage sites and hotels dot its 140㎞ coastline.
    3) Famous sites: The Alexandria Library, which is referred to as the cradle of ancient Western academia
     - The library was built by King Ptolemaios in 295 B.C., and is one of the largest ancient libraries in the world.
     - UNESCO and other international organizations have invested 200 million dollars in the library over the past
       decade.
     - The seven-story library has a 40,000 ㎡ space dedicated to an astronomical hall and conference halls at its
         center.
     - The library’s collection currently amounts to 500,000 books, but there are plans to expand the collection to 4
         million volumes.
     - The library was opened in the spring of 2001
  • The sisterhood relationship with Incheon established on May 17, 2000.
  • Sisterhood relationship was established on March 16, 2000.

Sisterhood History

  • Shim Gyeongbo, the Korean ambassador to Egypt, and Hussein Elfarouk Derar, Egypt's ambassador to Korea,
  • worked together from 1999 to 2000 to establish a sisterhood relationship between the two cities.
  • In May and June of 1999, the mayors of the two cities exchanged letters stating their intention to create a sisterhood.
  • Delegates visited Alexandria by invitation on May 16-17, 2000.

  • Alexandria, the second-largest city in Egypt, plays a central role in maritime trade and in coastal industry.
  • In April 1999, President Mubarak visited China, Japan and Korea to discuss political and economic cooperation between the countries.
  • As of 1999, about 850 Koreans were residing in Egypt, 400 of which were employees of Korean companies.
