City Overview
When Honolulu was discovered by British explorer James Cook in 1778, it was a small village populated by natives.
In 1816, Honolulu became a city, developing into a base of the whaling industry in the 19th century.
Due to its geographical position as a city on the Pacific, the city relies heavily on its port, and serves as a virtual crossroads of the Pacific.
In 1900, a naval base was established at Pearl Harbor.
