In Korea, kiwi fruits are chiefly grown in the southern costal regions, where the average annual temperature exceeds 15℃, the minimum required for the cultivation of this crop.
Due to the climatic constraints, the supply of this subtropical fruit is mostly met through imports from New Zealand, with only a moderate amount produced domestically.
Characteristics
Baengnyeong kiwi fruits, thanks to the oceanic climate on the island, which is characterized by a warm winter and a cool summer, are firm and rather large in size, with a deep brown skin.
Local kiwi fruits weigh about 100 to 120g per piece on average. Covered with fine spikes, the fruit has an emerald-green pulp surrounding a cluster of black seeds.
The fruit is consumed peeled, and is especially tasty when eaten with apples, pears or strawberries. Local kiwi fruits have a sugar content of 8%, which is about 1% higher than those produced in other regions. They contain 20 times as much vitamin C as apples, and 4 times as much as tangerines. They are especially popular among health-conscious consumers, and are also well-enjoyed as a food that promotes beauty.
