On May 19th, Incheon City celebrated the 17th World Day for Cultural Diversity at Incheon Aetle Plaza in front of City Hall, declaring its commitment to building an inclusive city that respects cultural diversity under the banner 'Foreign-Friendly City Incheon.'
Around 1,000 people attended the event, including foreign residents from various groups like the Incheon Vietnamese Association, the Chinese Education Association in Korea, the Koryo Saram Moms Group, the Myanmar Community, the Association of Koryo Saram, those of locals as well.
In April, the city established the "1st Basic Plan for Creating a Foreign-Friendly City Incheon (2024-2028)" to create a happy city Incheon that residents and foreigners build together. The plan focuses on four core values: settlement support, communication and harmony, respect for human rights, and policy participation.
The celebration featured various activities, including contributor commendations, a scholarship award ceremony, and Global Children's Choir performances. The choir included children from multicultural families, foreign residents, and native Korean children.
The event also featured booths offering global games, traditional Central Asian food, and activities from various nations, such as Madagascar. A children's drawing competition was also held, with the submitted artworks to be reviewed by the Incheon Art Association. The best pieces will be awarded the Mayor's Prize in June.
Mayor Yoo Jeong Bok stated, "For Incheon to grow into a truly international city and a global top ten city, we must create a society that recognizes and does not discriminate against cultural differences based on race or nationality. We hope this event helps spread a culture of understanding and respect by experiencing the cultures and traditions of various countries."
