Outdoor Performing Arts Hosted by the Incheon Culture and Arts Center

Created date

The Incheon Culture and Arts Center will present Stage On Screen, showcasing masterpieces from around the world through film in early September as cool evening breezes begin to blow.

First launched in 2013, Stage On Screen is a signature event of the Incheon Culture and Arts Center that has been well-received by the public for screening videos of world-class performances showcasing the latest trends. Stage On Screen will present operas, ballets and musicals in a spacious open-air plaza, offering free access to cultural experiences for citizens who might otherwise be deterred by high ticket prices.

Transformation of an outdoor plaza into a 1,650 m² lawn filled with relaxation

This year, Stage On Screen will feature a significant transformation. The gray stone-covered outdoor plaza will be replaced by a 1,650 m² lawn. Audiences can now relax on mats or loungers on the lush green grass while enjoying the performances at their own pace. The popular table zone is anticipated to fill up quickly. Bringing snacks or drinks will make the experience even more delightful for both the eyes and the palate.

Enjoy the world’s premier performances on a huge screen and immersive sound

The colossal 420" screen with immersive sound enhanced by the state-of-the-art audio equipment - the experience is truly spectacular. Commentary sheets at the venue provide insights into the origins, plots, and details about the directors and performers. Additionally, a photo wall on one side of the plaza offers a perfect spot for capturing memorable moments.

Brand new opening concert and popcorn parties

There are some new eye-catching parts to this event. Opening concerts will take place on weeknights at 6:20 PM. On Wednesdays, the male vocal duet Alpaca Acoustage will deliver an energetic performance with guitar and cajon, while Thursdays will feature the brass ensemble Luce Bläser performing popular animation soundtracks. Also, a new free popcorn corner will be available to enhance the festive atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a free serving of popcorn per person on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 7 PM.

This year's program will showcase four poignant programs over the course of four days: Pagliacci, Coppélia, The Magic Flute, and Elisabeth. On September 4, the event opens with Leoncavallo's opera Pagliacci. This verismo (realist) opera, inspired by a murder in 1870s Italy, gained such popularity that it was translated into every European language within two years of its premiere. The screening will be of the 2019 performance at the Maggio Theater in Florence, featuring baritone Leon Kim.

On September 5, the event will present Coppélia, a classic piece of nineteenth-century comedic ballet. The story revolves around Coppélia, a doll created by an eccentric scientist, capturing the nineteenth century's mix of curiosity and fear of science. The screening will feature The Royal Ballet's 2019 production of the 1954 revision by Ninette de Valois, known as "the godmother of English ballet." This performance highlights iconic stars like Marianela Núñez and Vadim Muntagirov, beautifully showcasing the charm of fairy tale ballets.

Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, as accessible and entertaining as a modern musical, will be featured on September 6. This is a live performance from the 2018 Salzburg Festival, where reality and fantasy merge. Adapted from the original, the story is narrated by a grandfather to captivate the audience. Join three children on a magical journey as they follow the storyline of a book and enter a world of wonder.

The Vienna Theater Association's highly acclaimed musical Elisabeth will conclude the program on September 7. This production, which delves into the life of Empress Elisabeth, one of the most adored and controversial figures of European royalty, captivates audiences with its compelling libretto and sophisticated music. The screening will feature the 2001 live performance on the open-air stage of Schönbrunn, the summer palace of the Habsburg imperial family, starring Maya Hakvoort, widely regarded as the greatest Elisabeth of all time.

Director Shin Byeong-cheol of the Incheon Culture and Arts Center stated, “In these days of heavy rains and sweltering heat, we highly encourage you to enjoy the finest performances with friends, loved ones, or family, and to savor the simple pleasures and relaxation of everyday life.”

The 2024 Stage On Screen event will be held from September 4 to 7 at the Incheon Culture and Arts Center's outdoor plaza. The event is free and open to people of all ages.
