Incheon Introduces First Nationwide Method to Collect Unpaid Employment and Industrial Accident Insurance Premiums
Incheon City has introduced a nationwide first method for collecting unpaid employment and industrial accident insurance premiums through the seizure and collection of unclaimed refunds.
This approach is expected to recover over 40 million KRW annually, with the potential to collect more than 700 million KRW if expanded nationwide.
The unpaid insurance refund refers to money paid by corporations or individual businesses for insurance premiums that have not been claimed. After three years, unclaimed refunds are forfeited and become the property of the Korea Workers' Compensation and Welfare Service.
The city has noted that refunds for paid employment and industrial accident insurance premiums are generated during the year-end tax adjustment process. However, many businesses, particularly those that have closed or suspended operations, fail to claim these refunds. To address this, the city plans to collect the refunds from delinquent businesses to cover the outstanding dues.
