On the morning of September 30, Songdo ConvensiA was already bustling as the three-day 24th World Korean Business Convention entered its final day. Since opening on September 28, the convention had brought together Korean business leaders from around the world and representatives of Korean companies for exhibitions, business consultations, and networking. At the heart of it all was Hwang Byung-gu, Chair of the Steering Committee, who had led this year’s convention.

9월 30일 오전, 사흘간 이어진 제24차 세계한상대회가 마지막 날을 맞은 인천 송도컨벤시아는 이른 시간부터 분주했다. 9월 28일 개막 이후 이어진 열기 속에서 세계 각지의 한인 경제인과 국내 기업 관계자들은 전시와 상담, 교류의 마지막 일정을 소화하고 있었다. 그 현장의 중심에서 대회를 이끈 황병구 운영위원장을 만났다.

Hwang, the 30th President of the Korean American Chamber of Commerce USA and CEO of KORUS Orchids, has long worked to connect Korean business leaders overseas with companies in Korea. This year, he took on another role as the first private-sector Chair of the Steering Committee in the convention’s history. Having attended the convention many times, he has long believed that the experience and networks of business leaders should play a greater role in creating tangible business results. “I will work to develop the convention into a platform that offers Korean business leaders around the world more business opportunities,” he said, expressing his sense of responsibility as the first private-sector chair.

미주한인상공회의소총연합회 제30대 회장이자 KORUS Orchids 대표인 그는 오랫동안 세계 한인 경제인과 한국 기업을 연결하는 일에 힘써왔다. 올해는 여기에 세계한상대회 역사상 첫 ‘민간 출신 운영위원장’이라는 역할이 더해졌다. 여러 차례 한상대회에 참여하며 실질적인 경제 성과를 위해서는 민간 경제인의 경험과 네트워크가 충분히 반영돼야 한다고 생각해 온 그는 “한상대회가 세계 한상들에게 더 많은 사업 기회를 제공하는 플랫폼으로 발전하도록 노력하겠다”라며 첫 민간 운영위원장으로서의 책임감을 전했다.

A Business Platform Strengthened by Private-Sector Experience

민간의 현장 경험이 더해진 비즈니스의 장

For Hwang, the key strength of private-sector leadership is firsthand business experience. Businesspeople who work closely with markets and transactions understand where demand lies and which connections can lead to real business opportunities. He believes that when public-sector support is combined with private-sector expertise and execution, the World Korean Business Convention can grow beyond networking into an economic platform that connects businesses with new markets and opportunities.

황 위원장이 꼽는 민간 주도 운영의 핵심은 ‘현장성’이다. 시장과 거래 현장을 가까이에서 경험하는 기업인들은 어떤 분야에 수요가 있고, 어떤 연결이 실제 사업으로 이어질 수 있는지 잘 알고 있기 때문이다. 그는 공공 부문의 지원과 민간의 실행력이 조화를 이룰 때 세계한상대회가 단순한 만남과 교류를 넘어 새로운 시장과 사업 기회를 연결하는 경제 플랫폼으로 발전할 수 있다고 본다.

This focus on tangible results was also a priority in preparing for this year’s convention. A diverse range of vendors, he believes, is essential to attracting buyers and increasing the chances of consultations leading to actual deals.

이번 대회를 준비하면서 가장 중점을 둔 부분 역시 ‘실질적인 성과’였다. 다양한 분야의 벤더가 충분히 참여해야 바이어의 관심을 끌 수 있고, 실제 상담과 거래로 이어질 가능성도 커진다는 판단에서다.

Throughout the three-day event, Korean companies and overseas Korean business leaders met for consultations across the exhibition hall. For Hwang, however, what happens after the first meeting matters even more. Sellers and buyers need to stay connected and continue exploring business opportunities after the convention for those meetings to produce tangible results. To support this, the Steering Committee plans to maintain networks between participating companies and buyers and strengthen follow-up support so that one-time consultations can develop into actual deals and exports.

전시장 곳곳에서는 사흘간 국내 기업과 세계 한인 경제인들의 상담이 이어졌다. 하지만 황 위원장이 더욱 중요하게 보는 것은 ‘만남 그 이후’다. 행사장에서 처음 만난 셀러와 바이어가 대회가 끝난 뒤에도 거래 가능성을 검토하고 관계를 이어가야 실질적인 성과로 연결될 수 있다는 생각이다. 이를 위해 한상운영위원회는 참가 기업과 바이어의 네트워크를 지속적으로 관리하고, 일회성 상담이 실제 거래와 수출로 이어질 수 있도록 사후 관리 체계를 마련해 나갈 계획이다.

Incheon: A Gateway City Connected to the World

세계와 가까운 관문도시, 인천의 가능성

Hwang also highlighted Incheon’s strengths as the host city. With Songdo ConvensiA, hotels, and other infrastructure for international events, as well as convenient global access through Incheon International Airport, the city is well positioned to welcome visitors from around the world. He also pointed to the active cooperation and systematic preparations of Incheon officials as a key strength of this year’s convention.

개최도시 인천의 강점에 대해서도 황 위원장의 평가는 분명했다. 송도컨벤시아와 호텔 등 국제행사에 필요한 기반시설이 잘 갖춰져 있고, 인천국제공항을 통해 세계 각국에서 편리하게 방문할 수 있다는 점이다. 대회를 준비한 인천시 관계자들의 적극적인 협력과 체계적인 준비 역시 이번 대회의 강점으로 꼽았다. 

In fact, Incheon and the Steering Committee worked closely from the vendor and buyer recruitment stage to connect companies with quality products to buyers with genuine purchasing needs.

실제로 인천시와 한상운영위원회는 좋은 상품을 보유한 기업과 실질적인 구매 수요가 있는 바이어를 연결하기 위해 벤더와 바이어 모집 단계부터 꾸준히 협력해왔다.

For Hwang, however, Incheon’s potential extends beyond hosting international events. With the Overseas Koreans Agency and the Overseas Koreans Welcome Center based in the city, he stressed the importance of creating an environment where visits and exchanges by overseas Koreans can lead to cooperation with local businesses, investment, and even settlement in Incheon. The Steering Committee also plans to work with the city to support local SMEs in entering overseas markets and expand export opportunities for their products.

황 위원장이 바라보는 인천의 가능성은 국제행사 개최에만 머물지 않는다. 재외동포청과 재외동포웰컴센터가 자리한 인천에서 재외동포의 방문과 교류가 지역 기업과의 협력과 투자, 나아가 정착으로 이어질 수 있는 기반을 마련하는 것이 중요하다고 강조했다. 한상운영위원회 역시 인천시와 협력해 인천 중소기업의 해외 진출을 돕고 우수한 제품의 수출 기회를 넓혀갈 계획이다.

For international visitors, Hwang recommends Yeongjongdo Island and the Eulwangri area. Yeongjongdo, home to Incheon International Airport, offers the sea, resorts, and beaches in one destination, while Eulwangri provides an up-close experience of the West Sea. He said the area, combining the gateway of an international city with a beautiful coastline and leisure facilities, offers visitors another side of Incheon to discover.

해외 방문객에게 소개하고 싶은 인천의 장소로는 영종도와 을왕리 일대를 꼽았다. 인천국제공항이 있는 영종도에서는 바다와 리조트, 해수욕장을 함께 즐길 수 있고, 을왕리에서는 서해의 풍경을 가까이에서 경험할 수 있기 때문이다. 그는 국제도시의 관문이면서 아름다운 해안과 휴양시설을 갖춘 이곳에서 해외 방문객들이 인천의 또 다른 매력을 발견할 수 있을 것이라고 말했다.

Beyond a Single Meeting: Building Lasting Networks

한 번의 만남을 넘어, 지속되는 네트워크로

For Hwang, the next step for the World Korean Business Convention is to create lasting connections. His goal is to connect Korean business leaders around the world by region and develop these ties into an ongoing global business network that helps Korean SMEs enter overseas markets.

황 위원장이 바라보는 세계한상대회의 다음 단계는 ‘지속적인 연결’이다. 세계 각국의 한인 경제인을 지역별·권역별로 연결하고, 이를 한국 중소기업의 해외시장 진출로 이어지는 상시적인 글로벌 경제 네트워크로 발전시키는 것이 목표다.

The plan is already taking shape. The world will be divided into 10 regions, each with its own Korean business council. Korean SMEs will be supported in participating in major trade shows in each region, giving them opportunities to meet local buyers directly.

구상도 구체적이다. 전 세계를 10개 권역으로 나눠 한상 협의회를 구성하고, 각 권역의 주요 기업 전시회에 한국 중소기업들이 참여해 현지 바이어와 직접 만날 수 있도록 지원할 계획이다. 

Beginning in 2027, regional exhibitions and business matching sessions will help turn promising Korean products into actual export contracts. An ongoing follow-up system will also help sellers and buyers continue discussing business after meeting at conventions and exhibitions. The aim is to turn the global Korean business network into a lasting platform for Korean companies to expand overseas and increase exports.2027년부터는 권역별 전시회와 매칭 상담을 통해 우수한 한국 제품이 실제 수출 계약으로 이어질 수 있도록 추진할 계획이다. 대회와 전시회에서 만난 셀러와 바이어가 행사 이후에도 거래를 논의할 수 있도록 상시적인 사후 관리 체계를 마련하고, 한인 경제 네트워크를 한국 기업의 지속적인 해외 진출과 수출 확대로 연결하는 것이 그가 그리고 있는 다음 단계다.

After the interview, Hwang returned to the convention floor, where participants continued to come and go. The 24th World Korean Business Convention, held from September 28 to 30, came to a close that day, but the expansion of the global Korean business network he envisions is only beginning.

인터뷰를 마친 황 위원장은 다시 참가자들이 오가는 행사장으로 발걸음을 옮겼다. 9월 28일부터 30일까지 이어진 제24차 세계한상대회는 이날 막을 내렸지만, 그가 강조한 한상 네트워크의 확장은 이제부터가 시작이다.

Incheon is both a gateway to the world and a city strengthening its connections with overseas Koreans. Alongside this is a new effort to bring Korean business leaders around the world together into a single economic network. The three-day convention may be over, but the new connections and business opportunities created in Incheon continue well beyond the event.

세계로 향하는 관문이자 재외동포와의 연결을 넓혀가고 있는 인천. 그리고 세계 각지의 한상을 하나의 경제 네트워크로 연결하려는 새로운 시도. 사흘간의 대회는 끝났지만, 인천에서 만들어진 새로운 연결과 비즈니스의 가능성은 대회 이후에도 계속 이어지고 있다.
