Incheon Health & Environment Research Institute Selected as Certified Career Experience Institution
The Incheon Metropolitan City Health and Environment Research Institute has been selected as a 2026 Education Donation Career Experience Certified Institution under a program administered by the Ministry of Education.
The Education Donation Career Experience Certification System identifies institutions that provide high-quality career-experience opportunities to young people free of charge.
With the government certification, the institute plans to further strengthen the expertise and public value of its educational programs.
It also plans to continue expanding programs designed to spark students’ interest in environmental and scientific fields and help them explore future career paths.
Nearly 100 Trees Die at Incheon Grand Park
Environmental groups are calling for a thorough investigation after nearly 100 trees were found dead at Incheon Grand Park, one of the city’s most prominent parks.
According to data provided by the Incheon Grand Park Management Office to GREENKOREA INCHEON, 67 pine trees and 31 broadleaf trees died and were cut down last month at the park, located in Jangsu-dong, Namdong-gu.
The management office said branches of some trees broke under the weight of heavy snow during a major snowfall in 2024, and that the damaged trees were pruned in May and June last year.
GREENKOREA, however, said there were no records of the location, quantity and extent of damages to trees affected by the heavy snowfall, and argued that excessive pruning by the city may have contributed to the trees’ deaths.
Inha University Finds Increased Microplastic Accumulation Along Tidal Flat Food Chain
Researchers at Inha University have reportedly identified, for the first time in the world, an increase in microplastic accumulation along the food chain in tidal-flat ecosystems.
The research team from the Department of Ocean Sciences and the Laboratory of Marine Zoology at the Department of Biomedical Science and Engineering collected and analyzed 81 samples of seawater, sediment, seaweed and benthic organisms from the tidal flats of Muui Island in Yeongjong-gu and Jawol Island in Ongjin-gun, Incheon.
A total of 1,630 microplastic particles were detected across all samples. Biological samples contained the most, with 1,428 particles, followed by sediment with 110 and seawater with 92.
The researchers also examined the biomagnification factor, an indicator of how much more of a particular substance accumulates in predators compared with their prey.
Incheon to Hold Air-Raid Civil Defense Drill on August 20
Incheon Metropolitan City will conduct a 20-minute civil defense drill across the city starting at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, in preparation for an air raid.
The drill will begin at exactly 2 p.m. with the sounding of an air-raid warning siren. Information on the drill and emergency safety procedures will be broadcast in real time via radio and disaster safety text messages.
Guidance personnel will also be deployed at shelters across the city to help residents move safely and smoothly.
In particular, each district and county will designate one public facility frequently visited by residents, such as a large supermarket or subway station, for a practical, citizen-participatory evacuation drill.
Incheon Culture and Arts Center Presents THE SCENE 2026
The Incheon Culture and Arts Center will present its in-house concert series THE SCENE 2026 from September 3 to 5 at the center’s Small Theater.
Launched in 2024, THE SCENE is now entering its third season. The series was created to carry on Incheon’s musical legacy as the center of Korean rock music and to fill the city’s landscape with the sounds and stories of youth.
The title of the series refers to the “scene” in which musicians, venues, audiences and other members of the music community are organically connected to form a music ecosystem.
Through the concerts, THE SCENE has sought to create such an ecosystem while exploring the present and future of Incheon’s rock music.
