Whenever the warmth of everyday life feels especially welcome, this is a place worth visiting.
At Singi Market, with more than 120 years of history, discover a warm and lively side of Incheon today.
Last September, as a cool autumn breeze began to blow, Japanese international student Kim Dong-ha visited Singi Market in Michuhol-gu, Incheon. The alleys were busier than usual as people prepared for the upcoming holiday, but Singi Market is lively throughout the year. Seasonal fruits, fresh vegetables, savory side dishes, rice cakes, and snacks fill the stalls, while the warm voices of shoppers and vendors blend naturally into the bustling market.

Kim, a member of Incheon’s Global Promotion Team, is currently studying nursing at university while completing clinical training at a hospital. Even amid the demanding routine of caring for patients, she often visits traditional markets. She does not always go there with something particular to buy. Simply walking through the market alleys and feeling the warmth of the people around her brings comfort after a tiring day.
“Every shop welcomed me with a bright smile. I had been quite exhausted, both physically and mentally, from my clinical training, but as I slowly walked around the market, I could feel myself warming up inside.”

As she made her way deeper into the market, she stopped in front of a rice cake shop. Freshly steamed rice cakes and neatly arranged treats in an array of colors immediately caught her eye.
“Their delicate shapes and beautiful colors are charming, and I love their chewy texture. I thought they would be the perfect traditional Korean dessert to introduce to my friends in Japan and other countries.”
For Kim, traditional markets are as much about the joy of meeting people as they are about the abundance of food. She says their greatest appeal is the chance to experience the everyday lives of Korean people up close—something that cannot be found at typical tourist attractions. Biting into freshly made food and exchanging friendly glances with vendors may be brief moments, but they become treasured memories.

With more than 120 years of history, Singi Market also left a very different impression from traditional markets in Japan. Unlike Japanese shopping streets that are often centered around food or seafood, she described Singi Market as a “complete package,” bringing together everything from fresh ingredients and household goods to clothing. She was especially impressed by the generous extras offered by vendors and the warm conversations exchanged throughout the market.
When she first arrived in Incheon, Kim thought of the city mainly in terms of its modern landmarks, such as Incheon International Airport and Songdo International City. But as a member of Incheon’s Global Promotion Team, she began exploring historic markets and hidden alleys, gradually discovering a deeper side of the city.

Now, she hopes to share Incheon’s warm and welcoming side, still unfamiliar to many international visitors, through engaging photos and short-form videos. Her simple goal this year is to spark a little curiosity in those who see her posts and make them think, “I never knew Incheon had such warm and welcoming places.”
“Incheon is a charming city where the past and present, the blue sea, and warm-hearted people come together in harmony. I hope people can walk through the city themselves and experience that warmth.”
A place she wants to return to whenever she misses the warmth of human connection, Singi Market has become a comforting pause in Kim Dong-ha’s life abroad—a place that has brought her one step closer to the warm, everyday side of Incheon.
