Once a gateway to the world, Incheon is now becoming a city where the world comes to stay. Its open-port history, the Inner Port waterfront, K-culture and music, MICE, island life, and everyday culture are coming together as a single urban experience. Incheon is broadening its appeal—from a destination people want to visit to a city they can imagine calling home.

세계의 관문이었던 인천이 이제 세계가 머무는 도시를 향해 나아간다. 개항장의 역사와 내항의 해양경관, K-컬처와 음악, MICE, 섬과 생활문화가 하나의 도시 경험으로 이어지며 인천은 방문하고 싶은 여행지를 넘어 살아보고 싶은 도시로 가능성을 넓혀가고 있다.

Incheon has long been a “city of arrival.” People from around the world have passed through its airport and port, 

and different languages and cultures have taken root across the city. 

Now, Incheon is evolving beyond a gateway to the world into a place where people stay to experience its culture and everyday life. 

Driving this transformation are culture and tourism: old spaces are finding new uses, while history and art are taking on new life in the present.

인천은 오랫동안 ‘도착의 도시’였다. 

공항과 항만을 통해 세계의 사람들이 오갔고, 

서로 다른 언어와 문화가 도시 곳곳에 스며들었다. 

이제 인천은 세계로 향하는 관문을 넘어 사람들이 머물며 문화와 일상을 경험하는 곳으로 변화하고 있다. 

그 중심에는 오래된 공간에 새로운 쓰임을 더하고, 역사와 예술을 오늘의 콘텐츠로 되살리는 문화와 관광의 힘이 있다.

THE INNER PORT: FROM A PLACE OF MEMORY TO A CULTURAL STAGE

내항, 기억의 공간에서 문화의 무대로

This transformation begins in Jemulpo and the Open Port area, extending to Incheon Inner Port. Since the port opened in 1883, people and cultures from around the world have passed through the area, leaving behind layers of Incheon’s history—from red-brick warehouses and historic buildings to Chinatown, Jayu Park, and the port’s industrial heritage. As the Inner Port waterfront opens up further to residents and visitors, and pedestrian routes connecting the Open Port area, Incheon Station, and the Inner Port improve, the way people experience the city will change as well. Waterfront paths, nighttime programs built around industrial heritage, and cultural walks linking alleys with local shops are turning the area from a brief stop into a place to explore slowly and linger. Sangsang Platform, a former grain warehouse transformed into a cultural space, embodies this change. Exhibitions, performances, festivals, and creative activities now fill a place once devoted to logistics and industry, bringing the old port back to life as a space where new culture is made.

그 첫 번째 무대는 제물포와 개항장, 인천 내항 일대다. 1883년 개항 이후 세계의 사람과 문화가 오갔던 이곳에는 붉은 벽돌 창고와 오래된 건축물, 차이나타운과 자유공원, 항만의 산업유산 등 인천만의 시간이 남아 있다. 내항 수변공간이 시민과 여행자에게 더욱 가까워지고 개항장과 인천역, 내항을 잇는 보행환경이 개선되면 도시를 경험하는 방식도 달라진다. 항만의 풍경을 바라보며 걷는 길과 산업유산을 활용한 야간 콘텐츠, 골목과 상점을 잇는 문화 산책은 이곳을 잠시 들르는 관광지에서 천천히 둘러보고 머무는 공간으로 바꿔 간다. 옛 곡물창고를 재생한 상상플랫폼도 역시 이러한 변화를 보여주는 공간이다. 과거 물류와 산업의 무대였던 곳에서 전시와 공연, 축제와 창작활동이 더해지면서 오래된 항구는 새로운 문화가 만들어지는 오늘의 공간으로 다시 살아나고 있다.

A K-CULTURE CITY THAT DRAWS FANS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

세계의 팬들이 찾아오는 K-컬처 도시

The Munhak and Guwol areas offer another glimpse of Incheon’s cultural potential. If major concerts and diverse cultural programming converge at Incheon Munhak Stadium and across the surrounding area, Incheon could become another destination for fans seeking K-content firsthand. Linking performances with hotels, shopping, dining, and cultural experiences would naturally turn a concert visit into a journey through the city. The convergence of music, film, esports, AI-powered content, K-beauty, and K-food could energize not only tourism but also the media, technology, hospitality, food service, and MICE sectors.

문학·구월 일대에서는 인천의 또 다른 문화적 가능성을 엿볼 수 있다. 문학경기장과 주변 지역에 대형 공연과 다양한 문화콘텐츠가 어우러진다면 인천은 K-콘텐츠를 직접 경험하기 위해 찾아오는 또 하나의 목적지가 될 수 있다. 공연과 숙박, 쇼핑, 미식, 문화체험이 하나의 동선으로 이어지면 공연 관람은 자연스럽게 도시 여행으로 확장된다. 음악과 영화, e스포츠, AI 기반 콘텐츠, K-뷰티와 K-푸드 등 다양한 문화산업이 만나면 관광뿐 아니라 영상과 기술, 숙박과 외식, MICE 산업에도 새로운 활력을 더할 수 있다. 

BUPYEONG OPENS A NEW CHAPTER ROOTED IN MEMORY

기억을 품고 다시 열리는 부평

Bupyeong Camp Market is where the city’s memories are being carried forward as cultural assets for the future. Long used as a military facility and largely closed to the public, the site is entering a new phase following its return, with environmental cleanup and park development under way. If its existing buildings and the memories they hold are preserved while cultural activities and green space are brought together, Camp Market could become another shared cultural space for residents and visitors alike. Stronger links between Bupyeong’s musical heritage—including its place in the history of Korean popular music—and nearby cultural venues could also create more opportunities for artists, residents, and visitors from Korea and abroad to meet through cultural exchange.

부평 캠프마켓은 도시의 기억을 미래의 문화자산으로 이어가는 공간이다. 오랫동안 군사시설로 사용돼 시민의 접근이 제한됐던 이곳은 반환 이후 환경정화와 공원 조성을 준비하며 새로운 변화를 맞고 있다. 기존 건축물과 장소에 남은 기억을 살리면서 문화활동과 녹지가 어우러진 공간으로 조성된다면 캠프마켓은 시민과 방문객이 함께 찾는 또 하나의 문화공간이 될 수 있다. 특히 한국 대중음악의 흔적을 간직한 부평의 음악자산과 주변 문화시설이 유기적으로 이어질수록 예술가와 시민, 국내외 방문객이 자연스럽게 만나는 문화교류의 기회도 넓어진다. 

WEAVING INCHEON’S ATTRACTIONS INTO A SINGLE JOURNEY

흩어진 명소를 하나의 여행으로

Incheon’s cultural tourism is moving beyond introducing attractions one by one. Instead, it weaves Jemulpo’s open-port history, the K-culture of Munhak and Guwol, Bupyeong’s music scene, Ganghwa’s natural landscapes and historic sites, Songdo’s international cityscape, and Yeongjong’s airport, islands, and sea into a single journey. Travelers can encounter history and architecture in Chinatown, Jayu Park, and the Inner Port; enjoy music and performances in Munhak and Bupyeong; and extend their journey to Songdo and the islands. The way people travel through the city is gradually shifting from “What should I see?” to “What story will I follow, and where will I linger?”

인천의 문화관광은 개별 명소를 소개하는 데서 한 걸음 더 나아가고 있다. 제물포의 개항 역사와 문학·구월의 K-컬처, 부평의 음악문화, 강화의 자연과 역사유산, 송도의 국제도시 풍경, 영종의 공항과 섬‧바다를 하나의 여행으로 엮는 것이다. 여행자는 차이나타운과 자유공원, 내항에서 역사와 건축을 만나고, 문학과 부평에서 음악과 공연을 즐기며, 송도와 섬으로 여정을 넓힐 수 있다. 도시를 여행하는 방식도 ‘무엇을 볼 것인가’에서 ‘어떤 이야기를 따라 머물 것인가’로 조금씩 달라지고 있다. 

AN INCHEON JOURNEY BEGINNING AT THE AIRPORT

공항에서 시작되는 인천 여행

Incheon International Airport is both a major gateway connecting Incheon to the world and one of the city’s greatest assets. The next step is to encourage international travelers to stay and discover Incheon rather than simply pass through. With a wider range of tourism programs tailored to varying layover times and lengths of stay, along with easier travel between the airport, downtown districts, islands, and cultural spaces, Incheon could become more than an airport gateway: it could be the first destination on a journey through Korea. Songdo’s MICE infrastructure can also draw international conference and exhibition visitors into the historic downtown, the islands, and the city’s cultural spaces, turning a business trip into a broader urban experience.

인천국제공항은 세계와 인천을 잇는 대표적인 관문이자 도시의 중요한 자산이다. 이제 필요한 것은 공항을 이용하는 외국인이 인천을 단순히 거쳐 가는 데 그치지 않고 도시 안에서 머물며 새로운 경험을 발견하도록 하는 일이다. 

환승시간과 체류기간에 맞춘 관광 프로그램이 다양해지고 공항과 도심, 섬과 문화공간을 잇는 이동환경이 더욱 편리해진다면 인천은 공항 배후도시를 넘어 한국 여행을 시작하는 첫 번째 목적지로 성장할 수 있다. 송도의 MICE 인프라 역시 국제회의와 전시를 위해 인천을 찾은 방문객의 동선을 원도심과 섬, 문화공간으로 넓혀 비즈니스 방문을 하나의 도시 경험으로 확장하는 역할을 한다.

The value of a global cultural city extends beyond tourism. When international residents, students, and workers can enjoy culture and leisure nearby, easily find the information they need, and travel safely and conveniently, the city’s appeal becomes part of everyday life. Incheon’s strength lies in the coexistence of old and new: more than 140 years of Open Port history and a cutting-edge international city, industrial heritage and K-culture, and peaceful island villages and large-scale performances—all within one city.

글로벌 문화도시의 가치는 관광객에게만 머물지 않는다. 외국인 주민과 유학생, 근로자가 가까운 곳에서 문화와 여가를 누리고, 필요한 정보를 쉽게 찾으며 안전하고 편리하게 이동할 수 있을 때 도시의 매력은 일상으로 이어진다. 인천의 강점은 오래된 것과 새로운 것이 한 도시 안에 공존한다는 데 있다. 140여 년 개항의 역사와 첨단 국제도시, 항만의 산업유산과 K-컬처, 섬마을의 고요한 풍경과 대형 공연이 서로 다른 모습으로 한 도시 안에서 만난다.
