Incheon announced the ‘Incheon Landing Operation 75th Anniversary Commemoration Week’ throughout the city from September 12 to 18 to honor the spirit and reflect on the value of peace.
오늘 우리가 누리는 자유와 평화는 결코 저절로 얻어진 것이 아니다. 목숨을 바쳐 지켜낸 숭고한 희생이 있었기에 가능했다.
인천시는 그 정신을 기리고 평화의 가치를 되새기기 위해 9월 12일부터 18일까지 ‘제75주년 인천상륙작전 기념 주간’을 인천 전역에서 개최했다.

Record of Dedication Never to Forget

Various events took place throughout the week to mark the 75th anniversary of the Incheon Landing Operation. The most prominent was a large-scale commemorative event held on September 15. The presence of high-ranking military and diplomatic of ficials from the six nations involved in the operation—the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, France, and New Zealand—added importance to the occasion.
제75주년 인천상륙작전을 기념하기 위해 일주일 동안 다양한 행사가 열렸다. 그 중 가장 하이라이트는 9월 15일에 열린 대규모 기념행사였다. 미국‧영국‧호주‧캐나다‧프랑스‧뉴질랜드 등 6개 참전국의 군‧외교 고위 인사들이 함께해 의미를 더했다.
The event started with a memorial service. Flowers were laid at General MacArthur’s statue and the memorial for the indigenous victims of Wolmido Island, followed by a service honoring the fallen members of the Naval Intelligence Unit.

Additionally, a ceremony was held to unveil the “Promise on the Waves,” a water drop-shaped sculpture commemorating the sacrifices and unity of the eight nations involved in the operation.
행사는 추모로 시작됐다. 맥아더 장군 동상과 월미도 원주민 희생자 위령비에서 헌화가 진행됐고, 해군 첩보부대 전사자들을 기리는 추모식도 이어졌다. 이어 물방울을 형상화한 기념 조형물 ‘파도 위의 약속’ 제막식이 열려, 작전에 참여한 8개국의 희생과 연대의 정신을 기렸다.
At the official commemoration ceremony held at Pier 8 of the Inner Harbor, the presence of 26 veterans filled the atmosphere with profound reverence. The flags of the 22 UN member states that participated in the war appeared in order, symbolizing the strong solidarity of the international community. The guests shared their hopes for Incheon’s growth as an international city of peace through commemorative and congratulatory addresses. Notably, the presentation of the first personal letter from General MacArthur’s son, Arthur MacArthur IV, further honored the event’s purpose.

내항 8부두에서 열린 공식 기념식에서는 26명의 참전용사가 입장하자 현장은 깊은 울림으로 물들었다. 이어 22개 유엔 참전국의 국기가 차례로 들어서며 국제사회의 굳건한 연대를 나타냈다. 내빈들은 기념사와 축사를 통해 인천이 국제평화도시로 도약하길 기원했으며 특히 맥아더 장군의 아들 아서 맥아더 4세가 처음으로 보낸 친서가 소개돼 행사의 취지를 더욱 빛냈다.
Following the ceremony, a reenactment of the landing operation took place off the coast of Pier 8. It began with anti-submarine efforts by maritime patrol helicopters and a dive by special operations personnel (UDT/SEAL). Marine Corps helicopters, amphibious assault vehicles, and landing craft were subsequently deployed one after another. In the end, the Korean national flag was raised at the landing site, vividly recalling the victory from 75 years ago.
기념식이 끝난 뒤 내항 8부두 앞바다에서는 상륙작전 재연행사가 펼쳐졌다. 해군 해상작전헬기의 대잠작전과 특수전 요원(UDT/SEAL)들의 급강하로 시작해 해병대 헬기, 상륙장갑차, 상륙정이 차례로 투입됐다. 마지막으로 상륙 지점에 태극기가 게양되며 75년 전 승리의 순간이 생생히 되살아났다.

Korea holds a special place in the hearts of both my grandfather, Lieutenant General Arthur MacArthur and my father, General of the Army Douglas MacArthur.
한국은 저의 할아버지 아서 맥아더 중장과 아버지 더글러스 맥아더 육군 원수 두 분의 마음 한켠에 깊이 자리하고 있는 나라입니다.
Few believed in the prospect of victory in September 1950. Victory at Incheon was given 1,000 to 1 odds of working, but my father brought together the best minds to ensure victory. Almost overnight, the multinational invasion force was assembled, while the courage of South Korean guerilla and intelligence operatives laid the groundwork for success.
1950년 9월의 작전이 성공할 거로 생각한 사람은 거의 없었습니다. 인천에서 승리할 확률은 1,000대 1이었지만, 아버지는 승리를 위해 훌륭한 인재들을 모았습니다. 하룻밤 만에 작전을 위한 다국적군이 결집했고, 남한의 게릴라와 첩보원들의 용맹스러운 움직임은 성공의 토대가 되었습니다.

A Bold Commitment to Maintain Peace
평화를 이어가기 위한 담대한 약속
The “International Peace and Security Forum” was held during the commemoration week, with approximately 1,000 participants, including representatives from participating countries, domestic and foreign experts, and young people, in attendance. The forum included ten sessions, such as keynote speeches, special sessions, theme sessions, and leader sessions, and it discussed peace and security cooperation in depth. Participants signed a joint declaration that conveyed the message, “Today’s solidarity leads to tomorrow’s peace.”
기념주간에 진행했던 ‘국제평화안보포럼’에는 참전국 대표를 비롯해 국내외 전문가와 청년 등 1,000여 명이 참석했다. 기조연설과 특별 세션, 주제별 세션, 리더 세션 등 총 10개의 세션으로 구성되어 평화와 안보 협력 방안을 심도 있게 논의했다. 참가자들은 공동 선언문을 서명하며 ‘오늘의 연대가 내일의 평화를 만든다’는 메시지를 전했다.
Moreover, special lectures at schools from August 11 to September 26, along with sessions by history teacher Choi Tae-seong on September 13 and 16, helped students and citizens better understand the historical importance of the Incheon Landing Operation in an accessible and in-depth way.
또한 8월 11일부터 9월 26일까지 학교로 찾아가는 특강과 역사 강사 최태성의 강연(9월 13 일‧16일)을 통해 학생과 시민들에게 인천상륙작전의 역사적 의미를 쉽고 깊이 있게 전달했다.

A Peace Festival with Citizens
시민들과 함께하는 평화 축제
Various cultural events were also organized to promote the value of peace among citizens. On September 13, Les Petits Chanteurs à la Croix de Bois (The Little Singers of Paris), known as the “Apostles of Peace,” performed at the Arts Center Incheon, singing songs of hope and love.
평화의 가치를 시민들과 나누기 위한 다양한 문화행사도 마련됐다. 9월 13일, 아트센터인천에서는 ‘평화의 사도’로 불리는 파리나무십자가 소년합창단이 무대를 꾸미며 희망과 사랑을 노래했다.

The most enthusiastically received event was the street parade. The procession that stretched from the South Plaza of Dongincheon Station to the Jung-gu District Office focused on “peace” and “future generations” this year, unlike previous years that celebrated victory. Instead of tanks and armored vehicles, a military band, a traditional military marching band, a children’s choir, and international students marched together, symbolizing diversity and inclusion. The streets were filled with cheers and applause.
가장 큰 호응을 얻은 행사는 거리 퍼레이드였다. 동인천역 남광장에서 중구청까지 이어지는 행렬은 전승 기념 이미지를 걷어내고 ‘평화’와 ‘미래세대’를 주제로 새롭게 구성됐다. 전차와 장갑차 대신에 군악대, 취타대, 어린이합창단, 외국인 유학생이 함께 행진하며 다양성과 포용의 의미를 드러냈고, 거리는 환호와 박수로 가득 찼다.
Additionally, citizens enthusiastically took part in performance, experience, and exhibition programs, appreciating the precious value of peace.
이외에도 공연, 체험, 전시 프로그램을 시민들이 즐겁게 참여하고 평화의 소중한 가치를 다시금 되새겼다.

On June 25, 1950, North Korean troops launched a surprise invasion across the 38th parallel into South Korea, starting the Korean War. The North Korean force’s offensive was fierce. South Korean forces barely managed to hold the Nakdonggang River front, but the situation was unfavorable. UN and South Korean forces planned an amphibious landing, seeking a chance for a counterattack, and considered Gunsan, Jumunjin, and Incheon as potential attack points. General MacArthur, who commanded the operation, chose Incheon despite all concerns.
1950년 6월 25일, 북한군이 38선을 넘어 기습 남침하면서 한국전쟁이 발발했다. 인민군의 공세는 거세었고, 아군은 가까스로 낙동강 전선을 방어했지만 전황은 불리했다. 유엔군과 한국군은 반격의 계기를 모색하며 상륙작전을 계획했고, 군산‧주문진‧인천 등이 후보지로 검토됐다. 작전을 지휘한 맥아더 장군은 모든 우려에도 불구하고 인천을 선택했다.

Incheon was deemed an unfeasible landing site due to its mudflats and tidal variations (with only a 1 in 5,000 chance of success). However, MacArthur was confident that the element of surprise would be maximized because North Korea would also see the Incheon landing as impossible. He believed that the allies could cut off the enemy’s supply lines once they captured Seoul through Incheon. The operation was approved thanks to his persistence, and September 15, 1950, was chosen as the landing date, considering the best tidal conditions. Incheon was deemed an unfeasible landing site due to its mudflats and tidal variations (with only a 1 in 5,000 chance of success). 불리한 조수 간만, 수로와 암초를 극복하기 위해서는 팔미도 등대 불빛이 필수적이었다. 당시 팔미도 등대는 인민군이 장악하고 있었지만, 미군 유진 클라크 대위와 한국군으로 구성된 켈로(KLO) 부대가 잠입해 등대를 탈환하고 점등에 성공했다.
그날 새벽, 어둠에 잠긴 바다 위에 한 줄기 불빛이 켜지자 군함들은 이를 따라 인천항으로 진입했다.
The landing force advanced from Green Beach on Wolmido Island to Red Beach in Bukseong-dong, Jung-gu, and Manseok-dong in Dong-gu, and Blue Beach near the Nakseom Intersection, securing the high ground. The success of the Incheon Landing Operation soon led to the recapture of Seoul, and the tide of the war turned instantly.
상륙군은 월미도의 그린비치에 이어 중구 북성동‧동구 만석동 일대의 레드비치, 낙섬 사거리 인근 블루비치로 진격해 고지를 확보했다. 인천상륙작전의 성공은 곧 서울 수복으로 이어졌고, 전세는 단숨에 역전됐다.
