Introducing Geomdan Prehistory Museum

Since 1999, an excavation survey for cultural artifacts were conducted at Geomdan district in Incheon as part of the city’s land readjustment project. As a result of these efforts, the remains and artifacts from a wide historic timeline from the paleolithic era to Joseon Dynasty (mostly from the bronze age) were discovered. Geomdan Prehistory Museum was opened based on the results of the excavation project. Our Museum is an exclusive museum focusing on the prehistoric ages. It features standing an exhibition hall, planned exhibition hall, and an academic activity hall across three floors (2 above ground, 1 below ground) which add up to a total floor space of 1894㎡ (roughly 576 pyeong). The exhibition halls feature prehistoric artifacts including china clay, bones, metals, and gems and glasses discovered during the development of Incheon’s northwestern districts such as Geomdan, Wondang, Dongyang, and Bullo. A residential site and stone grave (stone coffin) used during the bronze age has been reproduced in their original states as they where when discovered inside the exhibition hall. In particular, a variety of replica artifacts related to prehistoric culture have been prepared for children and adolescents inside the academic activity hall to thelp them use the items as an opportunity to learn about prehistoric culture. Our Museum hosts unique special exhibits each year and develops museum academic programs to offer our guests a chance to experience various cultural contents. We hope we can continue our best to become a museum that meets the cultural demands of the local community. Thank you.
