Seo-gu (Incheon) to bring new innovations in environmental science as an “Innopolis”

Outstanding publictechnology and research capability Open to special zone companies

The Seo-gu Innopolis inIncheon has declared itself an “innovation cluster” for environmental sciencein Korea.

On July 14, the IncheonMetropolitan City Government, together with Incheon National University (INU)and the Incheon Housing and City Development Corporation, hosted a “VisionProclamation Ceremony for the Seo-gu Innopolis in Incheon” at INU’s campus inSongdo (auditorium).

Each Innopolis is led by institutions with relevant coretechnologies and sufficient capacity for innovation. Earlier in June, theMinistry of Science and ICT designated and announced the Seo-gu area of Incheonas an Innopolis specializing in the environmental field. The Seo-gu Innopolisproject in Incheon is aimed at establishing a new hub to address environmentalpollution and create technology capable of managing the environment withinformation and communication technology (ICT). INU will be featured as thecore technology institution, and to support the commercialization oftechnologies developed at the Seo-gu Innopolis and to serve as a productionbase, a new comprehensive environmental research complex, environmental industryresearch complex, and Geomdan 2 general industrial complex (developmentpending) has also been included in the scope of the project. The ultimateobjective of the Seo-gu Innopolis is to open the outstanding public technologyand research capabilities at INU and other public research institutes in theenvironmental field across Incheon to companies in the Innopolis and supportthe entire process of commercializing new environmental technology.

Accordingly, the Cityhosted a Vision Declaration Ceremony to share its commitment to growing theenvironmental industry with the general public. At the Ceremony, it declaredthe vision behind the Seo-gu Innopolis project, and communicated itsdetermination to take the lead in developing environmental technology backed byinformation and communication technology (ICT).

Starting with a welcomeaddress by Park Jong-tae, President of INU, which will serve as the coretechnology institution for the Seo-gu Innopolis, the audience was shown anintroductory video showing successful cases of student start-ups, progressreports followed by a report on the Innopolis project, a presentation on thevision behind the Innopolis project, a signing ceremony for an agreement todevelop specialized fields at the Innopolis, and other proceedings.

The core vision of theSeo-gu Innopolis in Incheon is to grow into a new hub addressing environmentalpollution and also create technology capable of managing the environment withinformation and communication technology (ICT). By doing so, the city ofIncheon will look to take a giant leap forward as an innovation cluster forenvironmental science in Korea.

Based on this vision, theSeo-gu Innopolis plans to nurture three specialized fields - measuring andtreating environmental pollution using fine dust measuring technology oradvanced water purifying technology; recycling waste plastics and developingeco-friendly alternative materials with bio-plastic technology, etc.; managingthe environment with artificial intelligence, applying environmentalinformation monitoring technology, and distributing robotics technology torecover resources - to lead the way in developing and innovating environmentaltechnologies and products engineered to solve environmental challenges goingforward.

Following the visiondeclaration part of the ceremony, INU, BGF Ecobio, and the Korea ConformityLaboratories signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on creating anindustrial ecosystem in the above-mentioned specialized fields and onpracticing environmental, social, and transparent governance (ESG).

With this new MoU inplace, the three institutions will cooperate closely with industrystakeholders, academia, and research institutes to build the right industrialecosystem, including an infrastructure necessary for the development ofeco-friendly alternative material technology, relevant R&D initiatives,technology transfer, commercialization of technology/products, and support forstart-ups.
