Marking the Beginning of the Great Incheon Era

Incheon took the first step toward modernization and industrialization by accepting new cultures through the opening of its port in 1883. Since then, it has been an international trade center, experiencing societal changes, including politics, economy, and culture. Recently, Incheon expanded its global network with existing international organizations after successfully attracting the Overseas Koreans Agency. The industrial sector has diversified the regional economic framework following continuous successes in attracting advanced industries such as bio and hydrogen. Incheon made the ‘first’ into the ‘best’ and ‘leaped’ by taking on the ‘challenge.’ In 2024, Incheon began a grand voyage to become one of the - world's top ten cities, opening the way to the hearts of people worldwide as a global city.
인천은 1883년 개항을 통해 신문물을 받아들이며 근대화와 산업화의 첫걸음을 내디뎠다. 이후 정치, 경제, 문화 등 사회 전반에 걸친 변화를 온몸으로 겪어내면서 국제 교역의 중심지 역할을 담당하는 중이다. 최근에는 재외동포청 유치에 성공하면서 기존 국제기구와 함께 세계 네트워크 구축망을 더욱 확장했다. 산업 부분에서는 바이오, 수소 등 첨단산업 유치에 잇따라 성공하면서 지역 경제 기틀을 다양하게 만들었다. 인천은 ‘최초’를 ‘최고’로 만들었으며, ‘도전’하여 ‘도약’을 이뤄냈다.
그리고 2024년 인천은 글로벌 도시로써 세계인의 마음길을 열어가며, 세계 10대 도시로 나아가기 위한 위대한 항해를 시작했다.

Incheon's future will shine brilliantly by becoming one of the top ten cities in the world. Let’s take a look at the current status of the projects promoted to achieve that dream.
인천의 상상은 현실이 되다
세계 10대 도시 달성으로 눈부시게 빛날 인천의 내일. 그 꿈을 위해 추진하고 있는 사업 현황을 살펴보자.
1. Jemulpo Renaissance Project
Jemulpo Renaissance Project focuses on recreating Incheon's inner port and Jung-gu/Dong-gu into a people-centered city where culture, tourism, and industry are integrated. Incheon turned the inner port area into a marine tourism space to break from the image of an old and deteriorating city. Sangsang Platform was created and opened, and the Manseok Detour Overbridge was demolished. The Jemulpo Renaissance is scheduled to proceed in three stages. The first stage includes the designation as a free economic zone, the development of Piers 1 and 8 of the inner port, and the complex development of Incheon Station and Dongincheon Station until 2026. The second stage comprises the development of the inner port Piers 2, 3, and 6 and the Cube by 2030, and the third stage comprises the development of a new railway network, marina facilities, and industrial innovation valley by 2040 to complete the project.

1. 제물포 르네상스 프로젝트
제물포 르네상스는 인천 내항을 비롯한 중·동구를 문화와 관광, 산업이 융합된 사람 중심의 도시로 재창조하기 위해 추진하는 프로젝트다. 낡고 쇠락한 도시 이미지를 탈피하고자 내항 일대를 해양관광 공간으로 조성했다. 상상플랫폼이 조성되어 문을 열었으며, 만석우회고가교 철거 등을 실시했다. 제물포 르네상스는 앞으로 총 3단계로 진행될 예정이다. 1단계는 경제자유구역 지정, 내항 1·8부두 개발, 인천역·동인천역 복합개발 등을 추진하는 2026년까지 내용이다. 2단계로는 2030년까지 내항 2·3·6부두와 큐브 개발 등을 진행하며, 마지막 3단계 때는 2040년까지 신설 철도망, 마리나 시설, 산업혁신밸리 등을 구축해 프로젝트를 완성한다.

2. New Hong Kong City Project
The New Hong Kong City project will be expanded and renamed. The New Hong Kong City Project was about attracting multinational financial companies to the southern part of Ganghwado Island, Ongjin-gun, and Incheon Port. Incheon recently expanded the scale of the project to additionally attract several overseas companies and Korean merchant companies, including multinational financial companies in Hong Kong. In particular, Incheon is seeking ways to strengthen investment incentives, such as designating Opportunity and Development Zones and Free Economic Zones, so that large-scale investments can be made by making the southern end of Ganghwado Island the project center. In April, Incheon will announce a master plan that includes the New Hong Kong City project plan and explain major initiatives.

2. 뉴홍콩시티 프로젝트
뉴홍콩시티 프로젝트가 확장되고 사업명도 변경될 예정이다. 뉴홍콩시티 프로젝트는 강화도 남단 일대와 옹진군, 인천항 등에 다국적 금융기업을 유치하는 사업이었다. 인천시는 최근 이 내용을 포함해 사업의 규모를 넓혀, 홍콩에 있는 다국적 금융기업을 비롯해 여러 해외 기업과 한상 기업을 유치하고자 한다. 특히 인천시는 강화도 남단을 프로젝트 중심지로 삼고 대규모 투자가 이뤄질 수 있도록 기회발전특구, 경제자유구역 지정 등 투자 유치 인센티브를 강화하는 방안을 모색하고 있다. 오는 4월 인천시는 뉴홍콩시티 프로젝트 계획을 담은 마스터플랜을 발표하고 주요 추진 과제를 설명할 예정이다.

3. Hub City for Economic Activities of Korean Merchants Worldwide
Incheon plans to raise its status as a global city by transforming Incheon, where the Overseas Koreans Agency is located, into the center of the global Korean network, like Hong Kong and Singapore, where the global network of Chinese merchants became the driving force for growth. For this, Incheon opened the ‘Overseas Koreans Welcome Center,’ a one-stop service provider for overseas Koreans, and created a residential complex exclusively for overseas Koreans to provide convenience. Incheon hopes that this will closely connect Korean networks worldwide centered on Incheon to share various information and experiences. In particular, Incheon has the country's largest free economic zone, international airport and port, and a successful business environment, including the investment environment, legal support, tax benefits, and investment infrastructure.

인천시는 글로벌 화상 네트워크가 성장 동력이 된 홍콩, 싱가포르처럼 재외동포청이 자리한 인천을 전 세계 한인 네트워크의 중심으로 거듭나 글로벌 도시의 위상을 높일 계획이다. 이를 위해 재외동포를 위한 원스톱 서비스 지원기관인 ‘재외동포 웰컴센터’의 문을 열었으며, 재외동포 전용 거주 단지를 조성해 편의를 제공하고 있다. 이러한 기반을 바탕으로 세계 곳곳의 한인 네트워크가 인천을 중심으로 촘촘히 연결되어 다양한 정보와 경험을 공유하길 기대한다. 특히 인천은 국내 최대 규모의 경제자유구역, 국제공항과 항만 등을 지니고 있고, 투자 환경과 법률 지원, 세제 혜택, 투자 기반시설 등 성공적인 비즈니스 환경을 갖추고 있다.

4. Attracting Various International Events, including 2025 APEC
Incheon engages in various activities to attract top international conferences by utilizing its international event management capabilities and infrastructure. Incheon has led the growth of the MICE industry before anyone else and has the country's first international conference complex. As Korea is confirmed to host the 32nd APEC Summit in 2025, Incheon joined the race to hold the summit. Incheon formed a citizen-wide bid committee to host the APEC Summit in Incheon and established an organic cooperation system with related organizations. In addition, Incheon invited embassy officials from ten member countries to introduce the National Museum of World Writing Systems and Gyeongwonjae, emphasizing that Incheon was the best place for the summit.

4. 2025 APEC 등 다양한 국제행사 유치
인천시가 국제행사 운영 능력과 인프라 등을 갖춘 장점을 살려 정상급 국제회의 유치 활동에 적극적으로 나서고 있다. 인천은 누구보다 발 빠르게 MICE 산업의 성장을 이끌었으며, 국내 첫 국제회의 복합지구를 보유 중이다. 그리고 2025년 제23차 APEC 정상회의의 한국 개최가 확정됨에 따라 인천시가 유지전에 뛰어들었다. 인천시는 APEC 인천 유치를 위해 범시민 유치 위원회를 구성했으며 관계 기관들과 유기적인 협력체계를 구축했다. 또한 회원국 중 10개국 대사관 관계자를 초청해 국립문자박물관, 경원재 등을 소개하고 인천이 최적지임을 강조했다.

5. Incheon Landing Operation Commemoration Ceremony,
Elevated to International Commemorative Event
Last year, Incheon expanded the commemoration ceremony for the Incheon Landing Operation. Unlike previous years, which were held rather simply by honoring veterans and commemorating victory, the period and scale of the ceremony were expanded with a reenactment of the Incheon Landing Operation near Palmido Island alongside an international security forum and a parade of war veterans. Most of all, Incheon intends to remember the noble sacrifice made during the Incheon Landing Operation and shed new light on its historical significance so that people can feel the importance of the freedom and peace achieved through it. This year, Incheon plans to organize the Incheon Landing Operation Commemoration Ceremony in various ways and invite the leaders of all Korean War participated countries to make it an ‘international commemorative event’ for the 75th anniversary in 2025.

5. 인천상륙작전기념식, 국제적 기념행사 격상
작년 인천시는 인천상륙작전기념식을 확대 추진했다. 참전용사의 명예 선양과 전승 기념식 등으로 간소하게 치러진 이전의 기념행사와 달리 기간과 규모를 키운 것으로 팔미도 인근에서 인천상륙작전 재연 행사를 열었으며, 국제안보 포럼, 참전용사 호국보훈 거리행진 등을 실시했다. 무엇보다 인천시는 인천상륙작전 당시의 고귀한 희생을 기억하고, 얻게 된 자유와 평화의 소중함을 느낄 수 있도록 역사적 의미를 재조명하고자 한다. 올해도 인천상륙잔적기념식을 다채롭게 구성할 예정이며, 2025년 75주년 행사 때는 참전국 정상들을 모두 초청해 ‘국제적 기념행사’로 만들어갈 계획이다.
