옛이야기 담긴 100년 돌담, ‘긴담모퉁이길’

‘Gindam Motungi-gil (Long Wall Corner Road)’

중구 신흥동에서 싸리재로 이어지는 ‘긴담모퉁이길’에는 골목 속 변하지 않은 사람들이 살아가고 있다. 초여름 따사로운 햇살을 지고 서 있는 100년 돌담길엔 세월이 깃든 집과 오래된 나무, 골목길 사람들이 지긋이 나이 들어가고 있었다.

The same folks may be found in the lanes around the 'Gindam Motungi Gil,' which connects Sinheung-dong, Jung-gu, and Ssarijae Pass. Houses, trees, and people in the alleys were getting old together on the 100-year-old stone wall road in early summer, standing in the bright sunlight.

+ 긴담모퉁이길  : ‘긴담모퉁이길’은 신흥동에서 인천기독병원을 지나 싸리재로 넘어가는 완만한 오르막길이다. 이 돌담길은 1907년에 놓였다. 일본인들이 축현역(현 동인천역)과 경인가도(배다리 쪽)를 편하게 오가기 위해 낸 한국 최초의 신작로다. 

+ Gindam Motungi Gil  : ‘Gindam Motungi Gil’ is a slow uphill road from Sinheung-dong past Incheon Christian Hospital to Ssarijae Pass. This stone wall road was laid in 1907. It is Korea's first road that the Japan constructed to travel comfortably between Chukhyeon Station (now Dongincheon Station) and Gyeongingado(Baedari side).

Cypress Café(싸이프러스 카페)

늦은 오후, 한 노신사가 익숙한 듯 싸이프러스 카페에 들어섰다. 커피 한 모금을 들이마시더니, 주름진 얼굴에 잔잔한 미소를 띠며 말했다. “제가 이 집의 첫 주인이에요. 구석구석이 내겐 훤해요. 이곳을 지켜줘서 고마워요.” 이후 노신사는 몸을 일으켜 품에서 시각장애인용 지팡이를 꺼내 들고 길을 나섰다. 꽃바람, 하늘 그리고 돌담… 좁고 언덕진 길 위의 오래된 친구들이 그를 배웅했다.

그날을 이야기하는 이 대표의 목소리에 뿌듯함이 묻어났다. “긴담모퉁이길엔 인천 사람들의 추억과 역사가 쌓여 있어요. 이 공간을 지킬 겁니다. 편하게 오셔서 쉬었다 가세요.” 15년 전, 까까머리로 긴담모퉁이길 꼭대기 집을 올려다보던 소년의 뒤로 오래된 풍경이 잠잠히 흐른다.

An elderly gentleman entered Cypress Café in the late afternoon, as though he was familiar with it. With a soft smile on his wrinkled face, he took a drink of coffee and murmured. "I am the first owner of this establishment." I know every inch of this place. Thank you for protecting this location." The elderly guy stood up, took a cane for the sight impaired from his bosom, and headed out on the road. The flower wind, the sky, and the stone wall... On a small, hilly road, old pals saw him off.

Representative Lee's voice was filled with joy as he spoke about that day. "Gindam Motungi Gil is filled with Incheon's people's memories and history." I will keep this space open. Please feel free to come in and relax." A scene from fifteen years ago silently flows behind the child, with a crew cut looking up at the house on the top of Gindam Motungi Gil.

Dapdong Cathedral(답동성당)

돌담길의 서쪽, 답동 언덕에 오르면 로마네스크식 건축물을 만난다. 1897년, 한국에서 두 번째이자 인천에서 처음으로 세워진 답동성당이다. 1937년에 증축됐으며, 한국전쟁 때 일부 훼손되었다가 복원을 마쳤다. 답동성당은 120여 년간 시민들과 희로애락을 함께했다. 

인천시는 유구한 역사를 품은 대성당을 시민들의 휴식 공간으로 새롭게 꾸몄다. 주차·휴게 공간과 야간 조명시설 등을 갖추고, 지하 4층은 신포지하상가와 연결된다. 언덕 아래 인도까지 지그재그로 연결된 산책로도 있다. 이곳에서 다난했던 시간을 뒤로하고 인천의 내일이 더 행복하기를 기도한다.

If you climb Dapdong Hill west of the stone wall road, a Romanesque-style building may be found. Dapdong Cathedral, the second in Korea and the first in Incheon was completed in 1897. It was expanded in 1937, damaged during the Korean War, and repaired. For almost 120 years, the Dapdong Catholic Church has shared the inhabitants' joys and sorrows.

Incheon has refurbished its historic church to serve as a resting place for locals. It contains parking, rest spaces, and night illumination, and the fourth basement floor is linked to the Sinpo Underground Shopping Center. A zig-zag path also leads to the sidewalk beneath the hill. We wish Incheon a better tomorrow, leaving the difficult days behind.
