옛이야기 담긴 100년 돌담, ‘긴담모퉁이길’

‘Gindam Motungi-gil (Long Wall Corner Road)’
중구 신흥동에서 싸리재로 이어지는 ‘긴담모퉁이길’에는 골목 속 변하지 않은 사람들이 살아가고 있다. 초여름 따사로운 햇살을 지고 서 있는 100년 돌담길엔 세월이 깃든 집과 오래된 나무, 골목길 사람들이 지긋이 나이 들어가고 있었다.
The same folks may be found in the lanes around the 'Gindam Motungi Gil,' which connects Sinheung-dong, Jung-gu, and Ssarijae Pass. Houses, trees, and people in the alleys were getting old together on the 100-year-old stone wall road in early summer, standing in the bright sunlight.

+ 긴담모퉁이길
: ‘긴담모퉁이길’은 신흥동에서 인천기독병원을 지나 싸리재로 넘어가는 완만한 오르막길이다. 이 돌담길은 1907년에 놓였다. 일본인들이 축현역(현 동인천역)과 경인가도(배다리 쪽)를 편하게 오가기 위해 낸 한국 최초의 신작로다.

: ‘Gindam Motungi Gil’ is a slow uphill road from Sinheung-dong past Incheon Christian Hospital to Ssarijae Pass. This stone wall road was laid in 1907. It is Korea's first road that the Japan constructed to travel comfortably between Chukhyeon Station (now Dongincheon Station) and Gyeongingado(Baedari side).

율목공원을 오르는 골목길엔 1930년대 일본인들이 문화주택이라고 부르던, 아담한 이층집이 남아 있다. 그중 신흥동 옛 시장 관사는 인천에서 이름난 ‘좋은 집’이었다. 줄지어 선 고급 주택 사이에서도 단연 돋보이는 위치와 규모 덕분이다. 화려했던 번성기를 품고 외진 골목에 물러나 있던 신흥동 옛 시장 관사가 최근 새로이 문을 열었다. 2020년, 인천시가 이곳을 매입해 복합문화공간으로 새단장한 것이다. 1층 거실은 건축 당시 원형을 대부분 보존해 문화 체험 프로그램을 운영하는 공간과 서재로 꾸몄다. 거실 정면은 완전히 개방해 정원과 통하게 하고, 2층은 일본식 다다미방의 흔적을 살려두었다.
A modest two-story building survives in the alleyway leading up to Yulmok Park, which the Japanese referred to as cultural housing in the 1930s. The ancient mayor's residence in Sinheung-dong was a well-known 'excellent house' in Incheon. Its position and size set it apart from the other premium homes on the street. The former mayor's residence in Sinheung-dong, which had been relegated to a lonely lane and housed a glorious prosperous era, has been reopened. The city of Incheon purchased this property in 2020 and refurbished it into a complex cultural facility. The first-floor living area retains much of its original form from the time of construction and is furnished with space for cultural experience programs and a study. The front of the living room is completely open to the yard, and the second floor still has remains of a Japanese-style tatami room.

긴담모퉁이길 주변 골목에 최근 옛 정취를 살린 카페가 하나둘 생겨났다. 로얄답동맨션 길목의 ‘싸이프러스 카페’는 신흥동에서 나고 자란 이찬우(29) 대표의 공간이다. 오래된 집을 새로 꾸며 3년 전 문을 열었다. 건물은 새마을운동이 한창이던 1970년대에 지은 전형적인 2층 양옥집이다. 산업화 시대에 대한민국의 경제를 일으켜 세운 바지런한 인천 사람의 거처였을 테다. 이 대표는 남은 것을 최대한 살렸다. 한창때 흔적조차 퇴색해 가는 오래된 집에 젊은 활기를 불어넣었다.
Cafes have begun springing up one after the other in the lanes near Gindam Motungi Gil. CEO Lee Chan-woo (29), who was born and raised in Sinheung-dong, has a location called 'Cypress Cafe' on the street corner of Royal Dapdong Mansion. Three years ago, the old mansion was refurbished and reopened. The structure is a typical two-story Western-style house erected in the 1970s during the New Community Movement. It must have been the home of the hardworking Incheon people that boosted Korea's economy throughout industrialization. Representative Lee made the most of the situation. He injected new life into the old home, where even vestiges of its glory days had faded.
