One day in May, under the warm sunlight, she felt a somewhat familiar yet strange feeling in front of Ae Kwan Theater at Sinpo-dong, Jung-gu, Incheon. This space has witnessed over a century and has kept the memories of numerous movies and Incheon citizens. The one who visited the place was Jin Liuyi, an Incheon Global Promotion Team member. She raised her camera, saying, “I want to see Incheon more deeply and spread its charms to the world.”
햇살이 따사롭게 내려앉은 5월의 어느 날, 인천 중구 신포동의 애관극장 앞에 익숙하면서 낯선 설렘이 감돌았다. 100년이 넘는 세월을 품은 이 공간은 수많은 영화와 인천 시민들의 추억이 켜켜이 쌓인 장소다. 그곳을 찾은 사람은 글로벌 홍보단으로 활동 중인 김유이(Jin Liuyi)씨. 그녀는 “인천을 더 깊이 이해하고, 그 매력을 세계에 전하고 싶다”는 말과 함께 카메라를 들었다.

Familiar City, Affection Once More
낯익은 도시, 다시 만난 애정
To Jin Liuyi, Incheon may be a strange city, but by no means an alien town, because she still remembers visiting Incheon to see her grandparents when she was young. “My impression of the city at the time was that it was an organized, quiet place. However, I really came to love Incheon through the promotion team activities.” She grew up in China and developed a different perspective on the city and a new sense of responsibility after being selected as a part of the Incheon Global Promotion Team. “I am proud that I became someone who tells the story about this city, not a passerby.”
김유이 씨에게 인천은 낯설지만 결코 이질적인 도시가 아니다. 어린 시절, 외조부모가 거주하던 인천을 방학마다 찾아오곤 했던 기억이 남아 있기 때문이다. “그땐 정돈되고 조용한 도시라는 느낌이었죠. 하지만 이번 홍보단 활동을 통해 인천을 정말 사랑하게 되었어요.” 중국에서 자란 그녀는 인천시 글로벌 홍보단으로 선정되면서 새로운 책임감과 함께 도시를 바라보는 시야가 달라졌다고 했다. “그저 스쳐 가는 인연이 아니라, 이제는 제가 이 도시의 이야기를 전하는 사람이 되었다는 자부심이 생겼어요.”
A Space in Layers of Time
100년의 시간이 켜켜이 쌓인 공간
The place she visited is the Ae Kwan Theater. “This is more than a theater. This is where the Korean film industry and the sentiments of Incheon citizens are mixed in layers.” Before shooting, she first looked into the Ae Kwan Theater's origin. The former body of the theater, ‘Hyeopnyulsa,’ was a theater established by Jeong Chi-guk of Joseon in 1895. Later in 1925, it reopened under a new name, ‘Ae Kwan’, and has been with Incheon citizens for a long time as a movie theater. It was destroyed during the Korean War, but reconstructed in 1960 and has since consistently screened movies. Today, it also offers local cultural content, including independent films and special features. “Time has not stopped in this space, but it has captured the time slowly.”
그녀가 방문한 곳은 바로 애관극장. “이곳은 단순한 상영관이 아니에요. 한국 영화 산업과 인천 시민의 감정이 겹겹이 얽힌 곳이죠.” 실제로 그녀는 촬영을 앞두고 애관극장의 유래부터 자료 조사에 나섰다. 극장의 전신인 ‘협률사’는 1895년 조선의 정치국이 세운 공연장이었다. 이후 1925년 ‘애관(愛觀)’이라는 이름으로 새롭게 문을 열고, 영화관으로서 인천 시민들과 오랜 세월을 함께했다. 한국전쟁 중 소실되었지만 1960년 재건된 이후에도 꾸준히 영화를 상영하며, 지금은 독립영화나 특별 상영전 같은 지역 문화 콘텐츠까지 소화하고 있다. “이 공간은 시간이 멈춘 것이 아니라, 천천히 숨 쉬며 시대를 담아내고 있었어요.”
Projection Room, the Heart of the Past
영사실, 과거의 심장을 만나다
At the theater, she was specially allowed to enter the projection room. It is a space where you can feel the presence of old metal equipment, heavy film reels, and old films. “It was my first time seeing a real film projector. Changing the reel manually and bringing it to a focus itself was like a movie.”
The manually operated classic projector conveyed a very different feeling from today’s digital automation. Jin said, "If a digital device provides convenience, film leaves emotions. Technology has evolved, but today feels more precious if we understand how it began."
극장 안으로 들어선 그녀는 특별히 허락을 받아 영사실에 오를 수 있었다. 낡은 금속 장비와 무거운 릴, 그리고 오래된 필름의 향이 퍼지는 공간. “실제 필름 영사기를 본 건 처음이었어요. 손으로 릴을 바꾸고 초점을 맞추는 그 과정 자체가 영화 같았죠.”
수동 조작이 필요한 고전 영사기는 오늘날 디지털 자동화와는 전혀 다른 감각을 전했다. 김유이 씨는 "디지털이 편리함을 준다면, 필름은 감정을 남겨요. 기술이 진보한 지금이지만, 그 시작을 이해하면 현재가 더 소중하게 느껴져요."라고 말했다.
'Value of Preserving’ Greater than Modernizing
현대화보다 깊은 '보존의 가치’
Comparing the Grand Cinema in Shanghai and the Ae Kwan Theater, Jin said the two spaces are similar in that they are the center and symbol of film culture, but different in how they are treated. “The Grand Cinema has turned into a fully modernized complex cultural space while the Ae Kwan Theater has kept its original form, which gives it more meaning.”
She described the Ae Kwan Theater as the ‘space where time stays.’ The battered floor, faded posters, and even the footprints of the audience tell a story here. “Preserving is not about staying in the past, but keeping the density of a city's emotions.”
김유이 씨는 상하이의 그랜드 시네마와 애관극장을 비교하며, 두 공간이 영화 문화의 중심이자 상징이라는 점에서는 유사하지만, 극장을 대하는 방식에는 차이가 있다고 말했다. “그랜드 시네마는 완전히 현대화된 복합 문화 공간으로 탈바꿈했어요. 반면 애관극장은 원형을 보존하고 있죠. 그래서 더욱 의미 있어요.”
그녀는 애관극장을 ‘시간이 머무는 공간’이라 표현했다. 오래된 마룻바닥, 빛 바랜 포스터, 관람객의 발자국까지도 이곳에선 하나의 이야기였다. “보존이란 과거에 머문다는 게 아니라, 도시가 가진 감정의 밀도를 유지하는 일이라고 생각해요.”
New Stories Found in the City
도시 안에서 찾은 다음 이야기들
Leaving the theater, she was already preparing for the next step. “Incheon has many stories that have not been told. From multicultural families to the second generation of immigrants, environment-friendly transportation, and young artists, I want to show many different sides of this city.”
She defined Incheon as an ‘international city and the intersection of lives,’ meaning that it is a city where people from all over the world come together and various cultures coexist, and therefore, it is much more of a ‘place worth talking about.’
취재를 마친 그녀는 다음 발걸음을 벌써 준비하고 있었다. “인천에는 아직 소개되지 않은 이야기들이 많아요. 다문화 가정, 이민 2세, 친환경 교통, 청년 예술가들... 이 도시의 다채로운 얼굴을 보여주고 싶어요.”
그녀는 인천을 ‘국제도시이자 삶의 교차점’이라 정의했다. 세계 각지에서 온 사람들이 모이고, 다양한 문화가 공존하는 도시. 그래서 더욱 ‘이야기할 가치가 있는 곳’이라는 것이다.
Touched by Lingering
머무름이 주는 감동
At the end of the visit, we asked her what she would talk about if she were to introduce Incheon to foreigners. She answered quietly. “Incheon is more than a gateway to Korea. This is a city where you can see its real face when you stay, not when you pass by, because the alleys, people, and stories you find while walking around the place make you remember this city.”
As she described, the Ae Kwan Theater embodies Incheon's past and present, with Jin Liuyi’s eyes conveying a vision of the future. At the old theater that has silently stood in its place, we could feel the city's identity and the texture of its emotions intertwined.
취재의 마지막, 그녀에게 외국인에게 인천을 소개한다면 어떤 말을 할 것인지 물었다. 그녀는 조용히 말했다. “인천은 그저 한국으로 들어가는 관문이 아니에요. 이곳은 지나치기보다 머물러야 진짜 얼굴이 보이는 도시예요. 천천히 걸으며 만나는 골목, 사람, 이야기들이 이 도시를 기억하게 만드니까요.”
그녀의 말처럼, 애관극장은 인천의 과거이자 현재이며, 김유이 씨의 시선은 그것을 미래로 전하고 있었다. 고요히 숨 쉬는 오래된 극장에서, 한 도시의 정체성과 그 감정의 결을 우리는 함께 읽을 수 있었다.
