If you feel Korean classical music is ‘heavy and boring,’ it might be because you have yet to discover the true charm of gugak (Korean classical music). The vocals over the enchanting melody convey deep resonance as they move powerfully or spread excitingly. In particular, hwimori-japga, performed as if a storm is passing by, naturally makes the audience move their shoulders to the rhythm. Let’s listen to the story of Kim Guk-jin, who continues the legacy of Korea’s sound and the ‘excitement’ captured in it.

혹시 한국 전통음악을 ‘무겁고 지루하다’고 느낀 적이 있다면 아직 진정한 국악의 매력을 만나보지 못한 것일지 모른다. 구성진 가락에 얹어진 소리는 힘차게 꺽이며 때로는 흥겹게 펼쳐져 깊은 울림을 선사한다. 특히 빠르게 몰아치는 듯한 휘모리 잡가는 관객들의 어깨를 절로 들썩이게 만든다. 한국의 소리와 그 안에 담긴 ‘흥’을 지켜가고 있는 김국진 보유자를 만나, 그 이야기를 들어보자. 

Gugak with Unusual Excitement

색다른 즐거움을 선사하는 국악

The rhythm of janggu (double-headed drums) is heard dimly. When we opened the door, we saw someone dressed in a beautiful hanbok standing next to the janggu. In a minute, a song flowed smoothly from his mouth. Near the climax of the song, the fluttering hems of the robe, the wide-spread fan, and the accelerating lyrics make you exclaim in awe. This person, who captures the hearts of the audience instantly, is Kim Guk-jin, the holder of hwimori-japga art. 

희미하게 들려오는 장구 장단. 문을 열자, 한복을 곱게 차려입는 이가 장구 옆에 서 있다. 이내 그의 입에서 막힘없이 흘러나오는 소리. 절정에 다다르자 도포 자락이 흩날리고, 활짝 펼쳐진 부채와 점점 빨라지는 가사에 감탄이 절로 나온다. 한순간에 관객의 마음을 사로잡는 그는 바로 휘모리잡가의 예능보유자 김국진이다.

Hwimori-japga means a ‘song performed as if it storms,’ and the performer weaves the lyrics (saseol) tightly into the fast rhythm. It is a type of Gyeonggi Minyo (Folk Song of Gyeonggi Area) that was popular in Incheon, where professional vocalists would often wrap up their concerts with this after singing gin japga and seonsori. The lyrics are humorous and witty, reflecting and satirizing the times at the end of the Joseon Dynasty and during Japanese rule. 

휘모리잡가는 빠른 장단 위에 촘촘하게 사설을 엮어 내는 곳으로, ‘몰아치듯 내는 소리’라는 의미를 담고 있다. 인천 지역에서 성행했던 경기민요의 일종으로, 당시 전문 소리꾼들은 긴 잡가와 선소리를 부른 후 마지막에 이 노래로 마무리하곤 했다. 가사가 해학적이고 재치 있는 가사로 구성된 이 노래는 조선 말기부터 일제강점기의 시대상을 반영하고 풍자하고 있다. 

"Hwimori-japga is similar to rapping in contemporary music. The key is to convey the lyrics quickly and accurately at the fastest rhythm among the songs sung in gugak. I still feel nervous each time I sing, but it leaves a refreshing and cheerful feeling afterward." Hwimori-japga, a.k.a. Joseon rap, has inherited many songs, including Gombo-Taryeong (Song about Pockmarked Person), YukChilWol (June and July), ManHakCheonBong (10,000 Mountains and A Thousand Peaks), and Maengkongi-Taryeong (Song about Narrow-Mouth Frog).

“휘모리잡가는 지금 음악으로 비유하자면 랩과 비슷합니다. 국악 가창곡 중에서도 가장 빠른 속도로 가사를 정확하게 전달하는 것이 핵심이죠. 지금도 부를 때마다 긴장하지만 다 부르고 나면 후련하고 경쾌한 매력이 있어요.” 조선의 랩이란 별명을 가진 휘모리잡가는 현재까지도 곰보타령, 육칠월, 만학천봉, 맹꽁이타령 등 여러 곡을 전승하고 있다. 

A Silent Pursuit Immersed in Gugak

국악에 빠져 묵묵히 걸어온 길

Kim joined the workforce early at the age of 17. One day, he happened to visit a gugak school located in the Yankee Market in Songhyeon-dong. Mesmerized by the sound of gugak he heard while passing by, he told them he wanted to learn gugak, and master Lee Yeong-il, the head of the school at that time, taught him Gyeongseodo Sori. After working during the day and practicing consistently at night for ten years, he developed such excellent skills that he was able to have students. 

17살, 이른 나이에 사회생활을 시작한 그는 송현동 양키시장에 위치한 국악원을 우연히 찾게 되었다. 평소에 오가며 들었던 국악 소리에 매료된 그는 국악을 배우고 싶다는 뜻을 전했고, 당시 국악원장이었던 이영열 선생에게 경서도 소리를 사사받게 됐다. 낮에는 일하고 밤에는 연습하며 10년의 세월을 묵묵히 이어온 끝에, 그는 어느새 제자를 둘 만큼 뛰어난 실력을 갖추게 되었다. 

His passion for gugak ultimately led him to pursue a career as a professional Korean classical musician. In 1978, he studied under master Lee Chang-bae to refine his skills and continued learning while performing with master Park Sang-ok. After studying hwimori-japga at master Park’s suggestion, he returned to Incheon, where he taught many students, including Park Jun-yeong and Cha Seok-hwan, while operating a gugak school to preserve the traditions of gugak. I thought I should preserve this traditional culture in Incheon, where I was born and raised. 

국악에 대한 애정은 결국 그를 전업 국악인의 길로 이끌었다. 1978년에는 이창배 선생을 찾아가 실력을 더욱 갈고 닦았고, 박상옥 선생과 함께 무대에 서며 배움을 이어갔다. 박 선생님의 권유로 휘모리잡가를 배우게 된 그는 국악의 뿌리를 지키고자 인천에 돌아와 국악학원을 운영하며 박준영, 차석환 등 여러 제자를 길러냈다. 

"My primary goal was to nurture talented individuals who would lead the future of gugak in Incheon. I have been fortunate to have exceptional students, and we are collaborating to ensure Incheon’s gugak thrives together."

“제가 태어나고 자란 인천에서 이 전통문화를 지켜야 한다고 생각했습니다. 그래서 인천 국악의 미래를 이끌 인재 양성이 우선이었죠. 제자들이 잘 따라와줘서 이제는 함께 인천 국악의 발전을 위해 노력하고 있습니다.”

Endless Passion for Gugak

국악을 향한 끝없는 열정

In addition to hwimori-japga, Kim Guk-jin has mastered various styles of songs from the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, such as Seonsori Santaryeong (Folk Song of the Mountain Performed in a Standing Position) and Gyeonggi 12 Japga. 

He has pursued his path in silence, regardless of difficult situations, driven by his genuine love for gugak. 

He eventually became a master with expertise in the gugak field and currently runs the Hwimori-japga Preservation Society while focusing on nurturing students. 

김국진 보유자는 휘모리잡가뿐만 아니라 선소리산타령, 경기12잡가 등 서울·경기 지역의 다양한 소리에 능한 소리꾼이다. 

그는 국악이 정말 좋았기에 포기하지 않고 힘든 상황에서도 묵묵히 자신의 길을 걸어왔다. 그 결과 어느새 국악 분야에서 전문성을 갖춘 장인이 되었고, 현재는 제자 양성에 주력하며 휘모리잡가보존회를 운영하고 있다. 

Additionally, he is broadening his interaction with the general public to popularize gugak. Last April, he filled the first stage of the 2025 Communicative Friday Gugak Concert. This concert was planned to convey the grace and value of Incheon’s classical music to citizens through communication and featured master vocalists and Korean classical musicians from Incheon. The concert includes four performances until October, and seats are free.

또한 국악의 대중화를 위해 공연을 통해 대중과의 접점을 넓히고 있다. 지난 4월에는 ‘2025 소(통하는)금(요일) 국악 콘서트’의 첫 무대를 장식했다. 이 공연은 인천 전통 음악의 멋과 가치를 시민과 소통하며 알리고자 기획되었으며 인천 출신 명창들과 국악인들이 함께 참여한다. 공연은 10월까지 총 4회 진행되며, 무료로 관람 가능하다.
