The runways of Incheon International Airport never sleep. Every day, hundreds of flights transition between the sky and the tarmac, making the airport a theater of pure excitement for some, and a place of sudden tension or medical crisis for others. At the heart of this kinetic hub is Dr. Shin Ho-chol. Having spent more than two decades caring for patients within the terminal walls, he doesn’t view the airport as a transit point, but rather as a sprawling, self-contained city alive with countless human stories.
인천국제공항의 활주로는 멈추지 않는다. 하루에도 수백 대의 비행기가 설렘과 이별, 기대와 피로를 싣고 하늘과 땅 사이를 오간다. 누군가에게 공항은 여행의 출발점이지만, 또 다른 누군가에게는 긴장과 불안, 혹은 위기의 순간이 시작되는 곳이기도 하다. 그 거대한 이동의 한복판에서 20년 넘게 환자의 체온을 살피고, 위태로운 순간을 붙들어온 의사가 있다. 인천공항의료센터 신호철 원장이다. 그에게 공항은 스쳐 지나가는 장소가 아니라 수많은 삶의 사연이 머무는 또 하나의 도시다.

Dr. Shin Ho-chol’s enduring bond with Incheon International Airport dates back to 2001, the historic year the airport first opened its gates. At the time, he was a family medicine resident at Inha University Hospital, assigned to the airport clinic as an on-call physician for grueling night and weekend shifts. From routine travel ailments to high-stakes emergency responses and emergency runway dispatches for distressed aircraft, the clinic was an unpredictable crucible. Yet, amidst the chaos, he discovered the true essence of medicine. To him, Incheon International Airport revealed itself as a vast “Air City”—a microcosm where paths cross and diverge—and he chose to dedicate his life to protecting the people moving through it.
신호철 원장과 인천공항의 인연은 2001년 공항 개항과 함께 시작됐다. 당시 인하대병원 가정의학과 전공의였던 그는 야간과 주말을 책임지는 당직 의사로 공항 현장에 파견됐다. 감기 같은 일상적 증상부터 만성질환 관리, 응급환자 대응, 비상착륙에 대비한 활주로 출동까지, 공항 진료실은 늘 예측할 수 없는 상황의 연속이었다. 그러나 그는 그곳에서 의료의 본질을 보았다.
상주직원과 승무원, 여행객이 끊임없이 모이고 흩어지는 인천공항은 그에게 하나의 거대한 마을이자 ‘에어시티(Air City)’였다. 그는 이곳에서 사람들을 돌보는 공항 주치의의 길을 자신의 자리로 삼았다.

For Dr. Shin, the guiding principle never wavers: the patient’s life comes first. It is a role that demands decisive judgment, rapid execution, and an absolute commitment to human-centered care.
신 원장의 역할은 때로 지상의 진료실을 넘어 10㎞ 상공의 생명과 연결된다. 기내 응급환자가 발생했을 때 비상착륙 여부를 판단하는 과정은 그가 맡는 가장 무거운 책임 가운데 하나다. 가까운 공항의 의료시설, 기장과 승무원, 통제센터와의 협의, 다른 승객의 안전까지 함께 살펴야 한다. 그 기준은 언제나 분명하다. 환자의 안전과 생명이다. 결국 공항 의료의 현장은 빠른 판단과 정확한 조치, 그리고 사람을 먼저 생각하는 태도가 동시에 요구되는 자리다.
Compassion That Transcends the System

Amid thousands of cases, one patient remains indelibly marked in his memory: an American expat living in Korea who, struggling with severe alcoholism and joblessness, had fallen into homelessness inside the airport. By the time he was brought to the medical center, he was suffering from extreme exhaustion and acute malnutrition. Though the clinic is structured for outpatient care rather than long-term hospitalization, the staff quietly went beyond their usual duties. They cared for him for several days, providing hot meals and medical stabilization while diligently coordinating with his embassy and family to arrange a safe journey home. Learning later that the man had successfully rebuilt his life became a permanent reminder for Dr. Shin of the quiet, meaningful power of clinical empathy.
그가 오래 기억하는 환자도 있다. 한국에서 체류하던 한 미국인이 알코올 문제와 실직 끝에 공항에서 장기간 노숙 상태로 발견됐고, 탈진과 영양실조로 의료센터를 찾았다. 입원 시설이 아니었지만 의료센터는 며칠간 그를 돌보며 수액과 식사를 챙겼고, 대사관과 가족을 연결해 무사히 귀국할 수 있도록 도왔다. 시간이 지나 건강하게 지내고 있다는 소식이 전해졌을 때, 그 돌봄은 한 사람의 삶을 다시 일으켜 세운 기억으로 남았다.
