Incheon looking to open itslong-anticipated Songdo Severance Hospital with 800 beds by 2026
WithIncheon breaking ground for its long-anticipated Songdo Severance Hospital, thecity’s southern districts are expected to get their very own majorregional-level hospital in the near future.
The Songdo Severance Hospital will feature research facilitiesdedicated to the bio-medical field, which can help the Hospital liaison withthe Songdo Bio Cluster and Yonsei Science Park anchor collaboration betweenplayers across different industries, academia, and medical sector. Once online, Incheon is hoping that the Songdo Severance Hospital will create synergyin pushing the city’s “Bio New Deal,” a new deal policy tailored to Incheon’smedical and research environment.

The Songdo Severance Hospital, expected to open sometime in December 2026, willfeature a main building with 14 stories above ground, three stories belowground, and 800 hospital beds (total land area: 85,800m2 or 26,000pyeong) inside the Yonsei University International Campus in SongdoInternational City.
The Songdo Severance Hospital project is jointly promoted byYonsei University, the Incheon Metropolitan City Government, and Incheon FreeEconomic Zone Authority based on an agreement for phase-2 of the internationalcampus project between the “Incheon Metropolitan City-IFEZ-YonseiUniversity-Songdo Global Complex Development Co., Ltd.” Yonsei UniversityHealth System selected Samoo Architects and Engineers as the lead architecture firmAugust last year to design the Hospital.
TheSongdo Severance Hospital plans to provide specialized expert medical servicesusing the top medical infrastructure in the nation available via the YonseiUniversity Health System. Along with medical services, the Hospital will serveas a regional-level hospital for the Gyeonggi-do and Incheon region as well asthe western seaboard along the Yellow Sea, and also serve as a researchhospital equipped with bio convergence studies and research capacities.
Incheonexpects the Songdo Severance Hospital to become an integral part of the SongdoBio Cluster by collaborating with universities, research institutes,pharmaceutical companies, and bio companies overseas. Currently, Songdo is hometo a bio cluster infrastructure that includes corporations, universities, andresearch institutes in the field of biotechnology such as Celltrion and SamsungBiologics, and the Bioengineering Personnel Training Center.
Whenit opens, the Songdo Severance Hospital will help Incheon grow as afull-fledged global bio innovation cluster with world-class production basesfor biopharmaceutical products, multiple research institutes, and humanresources training facilities.
In an address, Incheon’s MayorPark Nam-chun said, “Building the Songdo Severance Hospital was a pledge I madeto my constituents when I was a candidate in the Mayoral election. I am veryhappy that I was able to keep that promise. As an important hub for industryand academic collaboration that is essential in creating a bio-health valley inIncheon and as a comprehensive medical facility servicing the region, theSongdo Severance Hospital will satiate Incheon’s need for medical services.”
