Incheon Takes a Leap Forward as a Hub City for the Metaverse

The City to Promote Specialist Companies and Form/Launch a MetaGovernance Program in the Second Half of This Year

The Incheon hosted the 2nd round of the forum for the formationof the private and public cooperation system (OMG*) with the key metaversecompanies of South Korea and other countries at the HQ of Deloitte AnjinAccounting Firm, Yeoui-do, on the 17th jointly with Incheon InternationalAirport Cooperation. The event was hosted under the theme of “MetaWays, IncheonStands Tall at the Center of the Metaverse,” with a view to seeking ways tosecure the platform competitiveness and form a collaborative ecosystem, alongwith the development of the Metaverse industry.

This is the second round of the forum in which foreigncompanies, like MS or AWS, would also participate, after the first round heldwith nineteen South Korean companies only, such as Naver Cloud and NHN Cloud,etc., on May 24th. The corporation and the city government explained theirstrategies to proceed with the Metaverse project, and the key businessparticipants discussed the related technologies and shared information duringthe event.

The forum this time was composed of four sessions, which were,respectively ▲ Invigoration of Incheon’s Metaverse ‘Urban Platform’ Ecosystem,▲ The Establishment of the ‘Governance’ for the Invigoration of the MetaverseIndustries and Realization of an Inclusive Society, ▲ Advice on the ‘DigitalCultural Contents’ in the Aspects of Civil Participation and Invigoration andTraining of Metaverse Talents, and ▲ Cultivation of Incheon-Type MetaverseSpecialist Companies and Development of the Corresponding Infrastructure(Gyeyang Techno valley ICT, Digital Contents-Specialized Industrial Complex).

Mr. Jaehoon Lee, the Director of the Airport Industry R&DCenter of Incheon International Airport Corporation, said in his keynote speechthat, under the theme of ‘the Introduction of Metaverse into the IncheonInternational Airport, “We will equip the ICN with a Metaverse system toprovide new airport operation and service, and it is necessary to build astrong cooperative relationship and connections between the public sector andthe private sector in the digital shift.” In addition, Professor Taehyung Kimof Dankook University, who is also the Metaverse MP, gave his presentationtitled “MetaWAYS and the Goal of Open Metaverse Governance,” while VicePresident Jeoseok Lee of Intel Korea presented “Digital Innovation Led by Dataand Metaverse,’ followed by CEO Gyeongran Yang of Dassault System who presentedunder the title “Industrial Metaverse in the Perspective of ManufacturingIndustries.’

A total of 15 key Metaverse businesses gave their presentations,followed by a discussion and Q&A sessions, which allowed vigorousdiscussion on how to gain economic viability and the strategies for publicpolicies from different perspectives. Jiyeong Kim, the Smart City Officer ofthe Incheon, said, “Since Incheon is the first to build a Metaverse platform inthe public sector, we hope many technology companies and public agencies wouldjoin the effort to build a larger ecosystem,” adding, “We will launch asuccessful open Metaverse governance by the end of this year.”

The city is trying to build the first Metaverse platform in thepublic sector. This platform, once completed, will develop a 3D Map thatencompasses Incheon International Airport, Open Port, Songdo InternationalCity, and Bupyeong Station, covering some 4 million m2, to serve asa Metaverse platform to operate an integrated XR service covering both outdoorand indoor positioning. For this purpose, the city plans to provide variousMetaverse services, including Home to Play Airport (an AR GPS service optimizedfor tourist needs,) XR Open Port Docent, and the XR GPS for Bupyeong Station,etc.

Also, the city plans to go even further than the connection,communication, and collaboration between the public and private sectors todevelop the Incheon e-connection Metaverse cooperation system based on theconcept of METAWAYS (Metaverse + All Ways Incheon). With this, Incheon is hopefullytaking the leading role in the Metaverse industry by developing new projectsfor securing new growth engines as a Metaverse city and building the social andinstitutional foundations, etc.
