Ultrafine Dust on Incheon Islands Linked to Overseas Inflow

Ultrafine dust detected in Incheon’s island regions, which have almost no pollution sources, is highly likely to have been carried in from abroad by wind currents. According to the Incheon Institute, annual average concentrations of fine particulate matter in these island regions, which are “national background areas” due to low local emissions, consistently exceeded the air quality standard of 15㎍/㎥. The study analyzed data from 2018 to 2024, including measurements from the National Background Air Quality Network on Baengnyeongdo, Yeonpyeongdo, and Uldo and the Baengnyeongdo Air Quality Research Center. High concentrations were most common between January and March, with levels exceeding 260㎍/㎥ recorded in January 2023 in Baengnyeongdo and Uldo.
