Incheon’s 1,000-Won Rental Housing Draws 4-to-1 Competition
1,275 households have applied for 300 units of Incheon’s purchased rental housing program, known as the “1,000-won housing” initiative, which offers homes for just 1,000 won a day, or 30,000 won a month. The application process closed with a competition rate of 4.25 to 1. This year, 90 units were set aside specifically for newly married couples and engaged couples without children, reflecting housing demand among those in the early stages of marriage. A total of 749 households applied for those units. Incheon Housing and City Development Corporation, or iH, will verify applicants’ income and assets before finalizing the list of prospective tenants. The final results will be announced in August.
Incheon Builds Unified Response System to Tackle ‘Lovebug’ Outbreaks
Incheon Metropolitan City says it is strengthening a coordinated response system with district governments to address outbreaks of insects such as Plecia longiforceps, commonly known in Korea as the “lovebug.” The move comes as climate change has led to repeated surges in certain insect populations, causing growing inconvenience for residents. The city plans to carry out population control and pest management measures across all areas of Incheon this year.
Incheon Aims to Cut Suicide Rate by 30% by 2030
Incheon says it has adopted its second mid- to long-term suicide prevention plan for 2026 to 2030, with the goal of reducing the city’s suicide rate by 30 percent by the end of the decade. The comprehensive plan, titled "Project On-Mind, On-Life," includes five strategic goals, 17 policy initiatives, and 153 detailed projects, with a total budget of 9.36 trillion won. The give strategic goals include strengthening community-based prevention systems, expanding crisis intervention and recovery support for high-risk groups, reinforcing health and welfare safety nets for vulnerable populations, addressing everyday risk factors, and enhancing the policy foundation for suicide prevention.
Incheon Launches Consultation Service to Prevent Rental Fraud
Incheon is launching a customized consulting service to help residents avoid rental fraud when signing jeonse or lump-sum deposit and monthly lease contracts. Beginning on May 18th, the city will operate a “Safe Contract Consulting” desk at the Incheon Jeonse Fraud Damage Support Center, offering free pre-contract consultations. The service includes guidance on reviewing property registration documents, verifying the identities of landlords and agents, analyzing lease-to-value ratios, checking eligibility for deposit return guarantees, and drafting special contract clauses.
National Calligraphy Competition to be held in Incheon
The Incheon branch of the Korea Calligraphy Association has held a nationwide call for entries for the Incheon Calligraphy Grand Exhibition, Invitational Artists Exhibition, and Student Calligraphy Grand Exhibition. A total of 556 works were submitted from 11 cities and provinces across the country. Incheon accounted for the largest number of entries with 285 works, followed by Seoul with 81, Gyeonggi Province with 45, and Sejong with 41. The exhibition will run from May 22 to 28 at Incheon Culture and Arts Center, with various visitor programs available during the event.
Incheon Launches Youth Policy Participation Council
A ceremony to mark May, which is the month for youth, and the launch of Incheon Metropolitan City’s Youth Participation Council for 2026 has been held. The event, hosted by the city and organized by the Incheon Youth Activity Promotion Center, brought together around 200 young people, youth leaders, and residents. The Youth Participation Council is a body established under the Youth Framework Act to ensure that young people’s opinions are reflected in the policymaking process. Incheon currently operates a city-level council composed of 21 youth members.
