Forty students stepped beyond the familiar boundaries of their school grounds to discover the city’s hidden layers. From the nostalgic alleyways of Sudoguksan to the futuristic landscapes surrounding Incheon International Airport, the Incheon they encountered was neither confined to the past nor defined by a single, static vision of the future. Walking through the same locations, eight student editorial teams each uncovered entirely different cultural layers and narratives. Through their boundless creativity and thoughtful curation, they reveal Incheon’s multidimensional charm, presenting a vivid local story that flows outward to the world.

익숙한 교문을 벗어나 도시의 숨은 결을 찾아 나선 40명의 청소년이 있다. 수도국산의 정겨운 옛 골목부터 인천 공항의 첨단 경관까지, 이들이 마주한 인천은 지나간 과거도, 정형화된 미래도 아니었다. 같은 장소를 거닐면서도 저마다 전혀 다른 문화적 레이어(Cultural layer)와 서사를 포착해 낸 여덟 개 조의 청소년 에디터들. 아이들의 반짝이는 독창성과 감각적인 큐레이션으로 재발견한 인천의 입체적인 매력, 세계를 향해 흐르는 찬란한 로컬의 기록을 전한다.

DISCOVERING THE REAL INCHEON BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

교실 밖에서 마주한 진짜 인천, 주체적 탐험의 서막

Perhaps the best way to truly experience a city is to immerse yourself completely in its rhythm. Even familiar places passed by every day can reveal entirely unexpected stories when viewed through a different lens. From April 20 to 24, 40 middle school students from Chadwick International School (Grades 7–8) embarked on a self-directed journey to uncover the city’s hidden layers. The “DIVE Week” project was far more than a simple off-campus field trip. It became a profound opportunity for students to experience the city’s unique sense of place firsthand. To these young writers, Incheon is not merely a backdrop to their lives, but a living, breathing community where history, movement, human stories, and global connections seamlessly coexist. By walking through the city streets themselves, the students learned how to translate the story of the place where they are growing up into their own unique, authentic voices.

도시를 여행하는 가장 완벽한 방법은 그곳의 호흡에 온전히 몸을 맡기는 일이다. 매일 오가는 풍경이라 너무 당연하게 지나쳤던 공간도 누군가의 주체적인 시선이 머무는 순간, 전혀 다른 이야기로 피어난다. 지난 4월20일부터 24일까지 진행된 채드윅 국제학교 학생 40명(7~8학년)의 여정은 바로 그 익숙한 공간 속에서 숨겨진 도시의 결을 찾아가는 자발적인 모험이었다. 이들이 참여한 ‘DIVE 주간’프로젝트는 단순한 교실 밖 체험을 넘어, 미래 세대가 도시의 고유한 ‘장소성(Sense of Place)’을 온전히 체화하는 깊은 교감의 시간이었다. 이들에게 인천은 단순히 학교가 위치한 지리적 배경이 아니다. 역사와 이동, 이야기와 세계적인 연결이 공존하는 거대한 공동체다. 아이들은 도시의 심장부로 직접 걸어 들어가며, 자신이 성장하고 있는 이 도시의 이야기를 스스로의 목소리로 전하는 법을 배웠다.

NARRATIVES WOVEN THROUGH EIGHT PERSPECTIVES

같은 공간, 다른 테마: 여덟 개의 시선이 직조한 서사

One of the project’s most compelling aspects was the diversity of perspectives brought to the same locations. Divided into eight groups of five, the students explored a curated list of cultural landmarks, including Incheon Hyanggyo, the former Dohobu Government Office, the Sudoguksan Museum of Housing & Living, Sinpo International Market, Incheon International Airport, Songdo Central Park, and the National Museum of World Writing Systems. The final result was eight distinct magazines, each reflecting its own unique theme, tone, and editorial vision.

이번 프로젝트가 품음 가장 매력적인 지점은 동일한 공간을 바라보는 다각적인 시선의 공존에 있다. 5명씩 조를 이룬 8개의 그룹은 인천향교와 옛 도호부관아, 수도국산달동네박물관, 신포국제시장, 그리고 인천국제공항과 송도 센트럴파크, 국립세계문자박물관 등을 함께 지나갔다. 이 밀도 높은 탐방 끝에 탄생한 8개의 매거진은 단 하나도 닮은 구성이 없을 만큼 저마다 독창적인 테마와 시각을 자랑한다.

Even when visiting the same spots, different student groups uncovered entirely different narratives. Some focused purely on the aesthetic beauty and historical significance of traditional Korean architecture, while others turned their attention to the human element, capturing the nostalgia of old neighborhoods and everyday life. Another group took a more contemporary approach, exploring modern urban landscapes and local food culture to reinterpret what it means to be from Incheon. Through these youthful eyes, Incheon’s heritage was reborn as vibrant, contemporary cultural content 

학생들은 하나의 거점 안에서도 누군가는 한옥의 부드러운 곡선과 역사적 미학에 집중했고, 누군가는 옛 서민들의 치열하고 정겨울 삶의 서사에 주목했다. 또 다른 그룹은 도시의 현대적 경관과 미각을 큐레이션하며 로컬의 정체성을 새롭게 확장했다. 청소년 에디터들의 손길을 거치며 인천의 오래된 유산들은 박제된 과거가 아닌, 오늘날 가장 힙하고 매력적인 콘텐츠로 새롭게 살아 숨 쉬기 시작했다.

WHERE LOCAL IDENTITY MEETS GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

로컬의 온도와 글로벌 감각의 융합, ‘도시 앰버서더’의 탄생

For students raised in a highly international environment, deeply engaging with the history and identity of Incheon holds a special significance. The magazines they created serve as expertly curated content, presenting local heritage in a way global readers can appreciate. 

국제적 환경에서 자라나 장차 세계를 무대로 활약할 글로벌 인재들이 자신이 디디고 선 ‘인천’의 역사와 정체성을 깊이 이해하는 것은 도시 브랜드 관점에서도 매우 특별한 의미를 지닌다. 학생들이 직접 기획하고 제작한 매거진들은 지역의 미시적인 이야기와 오랜 자산들을 글로벌 스탠더드에 맞춘 보편적인 아름다움과 세련된 감각으로 번역해 낸 고도의 콘텐츠 큐레이션 결과물이다. 

By immersing themselves in both Incheon’s deep-rooted local history and its modern global character, these students are growing into the city’s next generation of “Local Ambassadors”—capable of championing Incheon’s unique value wherever their futures take them. Their journey beyond the classroom walls has built a meaningful, creative bridge connecting Incheon’s present and future.

로컬의 깊은 역사성을 경험하고 동시에 도시의 눈부신 국제성을 체화한 이 청소년들은 향후 세계 어느 곳에서 있더라도 인천의 가치를 가장 매력적으로 전파할 수 있는 강력한 ‘로컬 앰배서더(Local Ambassador)’로 성장하게 된다. 학교라는 울타리를 넘어 스스로 도시의 경계를 넘나들며 연계점을 찾았던 학생들의 발걸음은, 그렇게 인천의 미래와 현재를 가장 단단하게 결속시키는 아름다운 다리가 되었다. 

Reinterpreting the city through the fresh eyes of the younger generation and sharing it with the world, this project stands as one of the most dynamic and authentic examples of grassroots urban branding in global Incheon.

미래 세대의 시선으로 도시의 콘텐츠를 새롭게 리브랜딩하고, 이를 세계로 확산하는 이번 프로젝트야 말로, 글로벌 도시 인천이 보여줄 수 있는 가장 역동적인 진정성 있는 도시 브랜딩의 미래다.

“I used to think Seoul was the only truly historic and special city in Korea, and that Incheon was basically just a place with an airport. But through this project, I realized that Incheon has a much deeper, richer history than I ever expected and is a genuinely important cultural hub for the northwestern region.”

“전에는 서울만 역사적이고 특별한 도시라 생각했고, 인천은 공항 외엔 특별한 게 없는 줄 알았다. 하지만 이번 프로젝트를 통해 인천이 예상보다 훨씬 깊고 풍부한 역사를 가진, 한국 북서부의 진정한 심정이라는 걸 깨달았다.”

“At the Sudoguksan Museum of Housing & Living, I connected with stories of how people overcame hardships in the past, while at Incheon International Airport, I was surrounded by modern global culture. It amazed me that these two opposite elements—the past and the future, the local and the global—could coexist so naturally within a single city.”

“My absolute favorite part of the project was getting to explore every corner of Incheon International Airport at a relaxed, slow pace. It’s a place I’ve always rushed through to catch a flight, but seeing it this way felt completely different. It felt warm and welcoming, almost like a home base that proudly showcases Korean culture.”
