THE TRADITIONAL MARKETS IN INCHEON

인천 전통시장에서 만난 세계의 시선

On a Sunday afternoon, a few days before Chuseok, the traditional markets in Incheon grew busier than usual. 

Moraenae Market and Guwol Market were bustling with customers buying materials for ancestral rites, and shops were busy making rice cakes and frying pancakes. 

Whether stranger or local, we could sense the festive holiday mood.

추석을 며칠 앞둔 일요일 오후, 인천의 재래시장은 한층 분주했다. 

모래내시장과 구월시장은 제수용품을 준비하려는 손님들도 발 디딜 틈이 없었고, 곳곳에서는 송편 빚는 손길과 전을 부치는 기름 냄새가 흘러나왔다. 

낯선 이에게조차 ‘명절’이라는 단어가 피부에 와닿는 순간이었다. 

Someone at the scene looked at Incheon with special eyes: Citta Nirmala Mahardhika from Indonesia. 

Living in Incheon with her Korean husband, she joined the Incheon Global Promotion Team this year. She also goes by her Korean name, ‘Park So-yeon.’ 

Embracing life in Korea like her new name, she wore a bright smile while exploring traditional markets. 

 그 현장에, 특별한 시선으로 인천을 바라보는 이가 있었다. 

인도네시아 출신의 치따 니르밀라 마하르디까(Citta Nirmala Mahardhika). 

한국인 남편과 함께 인천에 거주하며 올해 인천시 글로벌 홍보단으로 활동을 시작한 그녀는 한국 이름 ‘박소연’으로도 불린다. 

새로운 이름처럼 한국의 삶 속에 스며든 그녀는 이날 재래시장 취재에 나서며 환한 미소를 지었다. 

“I can feel Korea’s festival culture in every way here. It’s not just a marketplace but a space where people’s lives and bonds come together.”

“이곳에서 한국의 명절 문화를 온몸으로 느낄 수 있어요. 단순히 물건을 사고파는 곳이 아니라 사람들의 삶과 정이 오가는 공간이라는 걸 알게 됐습니다.”

A Market Scene with People and Affection

사람과 정이 머무는 시장의 풍경

Park So-yeon described her first impression of the market as “clean and organized vibrancy.” Unlike markets in Indonesia, shopping in the markets of Incheon is pleasant because the floors are clean and waste is not scattered everywhere. However, the energetic voices of merchants and the laughter of customers instead reminded her of her hometown. 

박소연씨는 시장의 첫인상을 ‘깨끗하고 정돈된 활기’라고 표현했다. 인도네시아의 시장과 달리 바닥이 질퍽하지 않고, 쓰레기도 아무 데나 버려져 있지 않아 쾌적했다고 한다. 그러나 활기찬 상인들의 목소리와 손님들의 웃음소리는 오히려 고향을 떠올리게 했다. 

She said, “There are shops lined up in a row carrying the same products, but customers always go to their familiar shops. Seeing that, I could sense the trust and affection connecting people,” describing the scene she saw. The shelves filled with half-moon-shaped rice cakes, sweets, cookies, and pancakes before holidays create a uniquely Korean atmosphere, even for foreigners.

The Meaning of Chuseok at Traditional Markets

She mainly focused on ‘Chuseok food.’ Taking pictures of half-moon-shaped rice cakes, various pancakes, sweets, and cookies, she reflected on the communal nature of the Korean holiday.

“Each dish appeared to symbolize family unity, going beyond just something to eat. The holiday scene at traditional markets offered a meaningful glimpse into Incheon.”

그녀가 가장 중점을 둔 취재는 바로 ‘추석 음식’이었다. 송편을 비롯해 다양한 전과 한과를 카메라에 담으며, 한국 명절이 가진 공동체적 의미를 되새겼다. 

“음식 하나하나가 단순한 먹거리를 넘어 가족의 단합을 상징하는 것 같았어요. 전통시장의 명절 풍경은 인천을 이해하는 소중한 창이 됐습니다.”

She had already visited many traditional markets in Korea, but Moraenae Market and Guwol Market stood out as particularly lively. They are spacious, and customers continuously flow in. Most of all, the friendly greetings between merchants and shoppers make these markets even more lively.

이미 한국의 여러 재래시장을 경험한 적이 있는 그녀지만, 모래내시장과 구월시장은 특별히 더 활기가 넘쳤다. 규모가 크고 넓어 발길이 끊이지 않았고, 무엇보다 상인과 손님 사이의 따뜻한 인사가 시장을 더욱 살아있게 만들었다. 

Korea and Indonesia: A Conversation between Two Markets

한국과 인도네시아, 두 시장의 대화

Throughout the visit, she reminisced about the market in her hometown. Traditional markets in Indonesia mostly accept cash, with few cases of credit cards or electronic payments. Meanwhile, traditional markets in Incheon accept various forms of payment, which is convenient even for foreigners. She mentioned that customers in Korea, whether men or women, usually carry shopping baskets or push shopping carts, but this isn’t common in Indonesia.

취재 내내 그녀는 자연스럽게 고향의 시장을 떠올렸다, 인도네시아 재래시장은 현금 거래 위주이며, 카드나 전자 결제가 흔치 않다. 반면 인천 재래시장은 다양한 결제 수단이 가능해 외국인에게도 편리했다. 또한 한국에서는 남녀 모두 장바구니나 카트를 끌며 장을 보지만, 인도네시아에서는 아직 익숙하지 않은 풍경이라고 했다.

However, there are as many similarities as differences. No matter where in the world, the market is a reflection of people’s lives and a space for active exchange and communication. “Language and culture are different, but the energy and affection are the same.” As she said, the market is a space of empathy that transcends borders. As she explained, Incheon is more than just the airport. Besides being the first gateway to the world, it’s a city where you can experience Korea’s tradition and modernity, along with its hospitality culture, all in one place. During the traditional market before Chuseok, we could see that warm and lively scene once again.

그러나 차이점만큼이나 공통점도 있었다. 어디에서든 시장은 사람들의 삶을 담아내는 그릇이자, 활발한 교류와 소통의 공간이라는 점이었다. “언어와 문화는 달라도, 활기와 정은 똑같아요.” 그녀의 말처럼, 시장은 국경을 넘어서는 공감의 공간이었다. 

Journey to Continue in Incheon

인천에서 이어질 여정

Through this experience, Park So-yeon developed a new plan.

이번 경험을 통해 박소연씨는 새로운 계획도 품게 됐다. 

“I want to explore the attractive venues of Incheon. Specifically, I aim to introduce halal food to assist Muslim tourists.” To her, Incheon is an “inspiring city that blends modernity and tradition, sea and mountain.” She said the scenery of Incheon, created by skyscrapers, quiet alleys, the blue West Sea, and a lush mountain range, demonstrates a harmony between two different colors, like the yin-yang pattern.

“앞으로 인천의 매력적인 장소들을 탐방하고 싶습니다. 특히 이슬람 관광객들에게 도움이 될 수 있도록 할랄 음식을 소개하고 싶어요.” 그녀에게 인천은 “현대와 전통, 바다와 산이 어우러진 영감을 주는 도시”다. 초고층 빌딩과 고즈넉한 골목, 서해의 푸른 바다와 울창한 산세가 한데 어우러진 인천의 풍경은 태극 문양처럼 서로 다른 색이 조화를 이루는 모습이라고 했다. 

Recommendation to Travelers

여행자들에게 건네는 권유

Finally, she warmly recommended Korea to foreigners visiting.

마지막으로 그녀는 한국을 찾는 외국인들에게 따뜻한 권유를 남겼다. 

“Don’t just stay at Incheon International Airport, but explore Incheon firsthand. Experience its famous restaurants, culture, nature, and the warm hearts of its people. You can see Incheon comfortably by hopping on the City Tour Bus.”

“인천공항에서만 머물지 말고, 꼭 인천을 직접 탐방해 보세요. 맛집, 문화, 자연 그리고 사람들의 따듯한 마음이 기다리고 있습니다. 시티투어 버스를 이용하면 편안하게 인천을 만날 수 있어요.”

그녀의 말처럼, 인천은 공항의 도시로만 머무르지 않는다. 오히려 세계로 향하는 첫 관문에서 한국의 전통과 현대, 그리고 환대의 문화를 가장 먼저 만날 수 있는 도시다. 추석을 앞둔 재래시장에서, 그 따뜻하고 활기찬 풍경을 다시금 확인할 수 있었다.
