Cities, like people, age over time. Neighborhoods once vibrant become quieter, and some areas fade away. Instead of replacing the old, Incheon revitalizes these spaces by maintaining their unique character while adding new functions. These walking paths tell the stories of the past, transformed into more comfortable and welcoming spaces—offering a unique way to experience Incheon.

도시도 사람처럼 나이를 먹는다. 한때 활기를 띠던 동네는 점차 고요해지고 여러 공간은 낡고 버려지기도 한다. 인천은 이러한 오래된 도시를 되살리는 방식으로 무분별한 철거 대신 지역의 고유한 특성을 보존하면서 새로운 기능을 도입하고 있다. 과거의 이야기는 이어가고 환경은 쾌적하게 정비한 인천만의 산책길을 소개한다.

After the port opened, rail lines expanded throughout Incheon to facilitate the transport of people and goods to inland destinations. Among these, the “Chukhang Line,” connecting Incheon Station and Nambu Station, historically played a vital role in industrial logistics, transporting coal, steel coils, cement, and bricks.

개항 이후, 항구로 들어온 사람과 물자를 전국으로 실어 나르기 위해 인천 곳곳에 철길이 놓였다. 그중 인천역과 남부역을 잇는 ‘축항선’은 화물철도 노선으로, 주로 수입 석탄과 냉연코일, 시멘트, 벽돌 등을 운송하며 산업의 흐름을 이끌었다. 

Opened in February 1959, the line operated for decades before freight service waned, and it eventually closed in January 2023. As its purpose diminished, the tracks remained but fell into disuse, gradually becoming neglected urban space.

Earlier this year, the site was restored and reopened to the public. Waste and overgrowth were cleared, and a 277-meter pedestrian path was created, reconnecting the area to existing walkways. With fences removed, the space has become more open and inviting.

Currently, pedestrians walk along the former train route at a leisurely pace. Plans to connect the route to Sangsang Platform and Gaehang Plaza are expected to enhance accessibility.

1959년 2월 개통된 이 노선은 오랜 기간 운행됐으나, 2012년 남부역 폐지 이후 건축자재 운송이 중단됐다. 이후에도 석탄부두와 인천역을 연결하는 구간은 유지됐지만, 2022년 석탄부두선마저 이용이 중단되면서 결국 2023년 1월 축항선이 폐선됐다. 한때 산업 성장의 중심이었던 인천의 지상 화물철도는 항만 구조 변화와 교통수단의 발달로 점차 역할을 잃었다. 철도의 운행은 멈췄지만 철길은 그대로 남겨졌고, 관리가 이뤄지지 않으면서 주변에는 쓰레기와 잡초가 쌓여 도시 미관을 해치는 공간으로 변해갔다. 

이렇게 오랜 시간 방치됐던 철길은 올해 초 대대적인 정비를 통해 시민들에게 다시 개방됐다. 폐선부지의 각종 폐기물과 잡목을 정비하고, 기존 보도와 연결해 277m 길이의 임시 보행로를 조성했다. 특히 철책과 울타리로 가로막혔던 공간이 개방되면서 도시 풍경은 한층 쾌적해졌다. 이제 이곳은 열차 대신 사람이 철길을 따라 걸으며 여유를 만끽하게 됐다. 향후 상상플랫폼 개항광장으로 연결되는 진입로가 개설되면 시민 접근성은 더욱 높아질 것으로 기대된다.

Incheon’s once tranquil sea has experienced a significant transformation. With the development of ports, piers, and factories, the area flourished with activity before entering a period of decline. Starting in the 1980s, much of Dong-gu’s coastline was restricted due to industrial zones and military installations, isolating residents from the sea.

과거 고요하게 일렁이던 인천의 바다는 변화의 물결 속에서 크게 달라졌다. 항만과 부두, 거대한 공장이 들어서며 사람들로 북적였고 동네는 활기가 돋았다. 그것도 잠시, 시대의 흐름에 밀려 삶의 고된 흔적만 남겨졌다. 특히 동구 일대 바다에는 공장 지역과 군사 보호시설로 포함되는 구역이 많아지면서 1980년대 이후 주민들은 바다와 단절됐다

In May 2021, the Manseok–Hwasu Coastal Walkway was inaugurated to open the shoreline to the public and offer a relaxing space. The route includes a wave-inspired deck, an observatory converted from a former military post, a large waterfront plaza, and a ship-shaped photo zone. Stretching 2.42 km, the walkway provides continuous ocean vistas, featuring rest areas and a bike lane for a leisurely experience. At night, vibrant lighting improves safety and creates a lively ambiance.

2021년 5월, 잃어버린 바다를 시민들에게 되돌려주고 생활 휴식공간을 제공하기 위해 만석화수 해안산책로가 조성됐다. 파도를 형상화한 웨이브데크와 군사초소를 활용한 전망대가 만들어졌으며, 커다란 해안광장과 범선 모양의 포토존이 더해져 공간은 한층 다채롭게 구성됐다. 총길이 2,420m에 이른 산책로는 전 구간에서 바다 풍경을 감상할 수 있으며, 편히 앉아서 휴식할 수 있는 쉼터도 군데군데 자리한다. 또한 자전거도로가 마련되어 여유롭게 라이딩을 즐기기 좋고, 야간에는 형형색색의 조명이 더해져 안전하고 아름다운 산책 환경을 제공한다. 

Off the coast lies Mulchido, Dong-gu’s sole island, with Yeongjongdo visible further out. The scenery—where port infrastructure meets industrial landscapes—evokes a unique sense of place, molded by history and daily life.

Further expansion is underway, with a 4.72 km route planned along the Manseok and Hwasu piers, expected to be completed in 2028.

반짝이는 물결 위로 떠 있는 물치도는 동구가 가진 유일한 섬이다. 그 너머로 영종도가 선명하게 펼쳐진다. 인천항과 회색빛 공장들이 어우러진 풍경은 화려한 절경과 다른, 이곳만의 역사와 삶의 흔적을 고스란히 담아낸다. 현재 길 끝에는 공사가 한창이다. 만석화수 해안산책로를 완성하는 3단계 공사가 진행되고 있기 때문이다. 구간은 만석부두와 화수부두 해안에 이르는 총 4.72㎞ 구간으로 2028년 완공을 목표로 한다.
