Thin strands of grass are intertwined at the fingertips, creating a dense texture. With skillful hands, she weaves sedge, adding various colors to craft delicate patterns.
When she finishes the last strand, a beautiful piece of sedge work appears before her.
We met Yu Seon-ok, who tirelessly dedicates herself to creating everything from traditional household items to new designs, to hear her story.
얇은 풀 가닥이 손끝에서 엮이며 촘촘한 결이 생긴다. 거침없는 손놀림으로 패턴을 짜고 다양한 색을 더해 섬세한 무늬를 만들어간다.
마지막 한 올을 마무리하자 아름다운 완초공예품이 눈앞에 드러난다.
전통 생활용품부터 새로운 작품까지 쉼 없이 작업에 몰두하고 있는 유선옥 보유자를 만나 이야기를 들어보았다.

Crafts that Add Practicality to Art
예술에 실용을 더한 공예품
Sedge, a grass that grows in rice paddies and wetlands, is tough and resilient, yet hollow inside, making it light and flexible. Using its characteristic that softens when wet, various items have been made. Sedge craft has a long history, and the <Chronicles of the Three States> written in the 12th century indicates that there was an organization dedicated to supplying mats and crafts to the royal family. Over time, it began to be widely used by commoners, and its popularity grew, leading to the continued development of “sedge crafts” for making everyday items.
왕골은 논이나 습지에서 자라는 풀로 질기고 탄력이 좋으며 속이 비어 가볍고 유연하다. 특히물에 적시면 다시 부드러워지는 성질 덕분에 왕골을 활용한 물건이 만들어졌다. 이는 오랜 역사로 「삼국사기」를 살펴보면 왕실에 돗자리나 공예품을 납품하는 전담 기구가 있었다는 기록이 전해진다. 시간이 흘러 서민 가정에서도 널리 활용되면서 왕골의 인기는 높아졌고, 생활용품을 만드는 기술인 ‘완초공예’가 계속 이어지게 됐다.
Even until the 1980s, every household on Gyodong Island, Ganghwa, wove sedge as a side hustle. Yu Seon-ok, also, naturally learned the craft and, following her father’s advice, visited a young man known for his sedge work.
This man became her mentor and later her husband, the late Lee Sang-jae. This marked the start of a deep connection between her life and sedge.
1980년대까지만 해도 강화 교동도에서는 집집마다 왕골 짜는 일을 부업으로 삼았다. 유선옥 보유자도 자연스럽게 왕골을 접했고, 아버지의 뜻에 따라 완초공예로 유명하던 청년을 찾아가게 됐다. 그가 바로 그녀의 스승이자 남편인 고(故) 이상재 보유자였다. 이 만남을 계기로 그녀의 삶과 왕골은 굳게 얽히게 됐다.

A Work Created by Elaborate Hands
정교한 손길이 빚는 작품
Sedge craft starts with eight warp strands woven around two weft strands. The warp strands are then doubled to adjust the width, and colored sedge is inserted to create a pattern. The quality of the work depends on whether the inside and outside textures align perfectly during weaving. The work continues even after completion. The solid craftwork is finished only after hammering it with a wooden mallet to fill gaps and solidify the space. Yu Seon-ok, the holder of the sedge weaving craft, has repeated this process for 59 years. Though it can become tedious, her eyes still sparkle as she weaves the sedge.
완초공예는 여덟 개의 날줄을 중심으로 두 가닥의 씨줄을 가지고 돌려 엮으며 시작한다. 날줄을 배로 늘려 넓이를 조절하고, 색을 입힌 왕골을 넣어 무늬를 새긴다. 안과 밖을 연결해 짜 넣을 때 안팎의 결이 완벽히 맞아떨어지느냐에 따라 작품의 완성도가 갈린다. 완성 후에도 작업은 끝나지 않는다. 나무망치로 두드려 틈을 메우고 공간을 다져야 비로소 단단한 공예품이 완성된다. 이 과정을 59년간 반복했던 유선옥 보유자. 지루해질 법도 하지만 왕골을 짜는 그녀의 눈은 여전히 반짝인다
“I’ve never been bored or tired of it. There are so many things I still want to try. I love this work so much that whenever I have free time while doing chores, I always go to my studio to look at my artworks.”
“한 번도 지루하거나 질린 적이 단 한 순간도 없었습니다. 아직 해보고 싶은 작업이 너무 많거든요. 집안일을 하다가 잠시 틈이 생길 때면 항상 작업하는 방에 가서 둘러볼 만큼 이 작업이 정말 좋아합니다.”
With so much affection, each of her pieces shines. One of her most cherished items is a set of refreshment bowls she made in 1999, which won the Presidential Award at the Korea Crafts Competition.
그 애정이 가득 담겨 있어서일까. 그녀의 작품들은 하나같이 빛이 난다. 특히 그녀가 애정을 갖는 작품은 1999년에 만든 다과그릇 세트로, 대한민국공예품대전 대통령상을 수상한 바 있다.

The Silently Continued Grace of Korean Tradition
묵묵히 이어가는 한국 전통의 멋
Well-dried sedge has a refined, white hue. The colorful patterns woven into it add an elegant charm. The subtle scent of grass and smooth luster convey the beauty of nature intact, and its tough, durable properties ensure long-lasting durability. The colors of sedge crafts deepen over time. The lustrous shine persists, shining with a golden glow. The shapes preserve the beauty of time.
잘 건조된 왕골은 단아한 미백색을 띤다. 이와 어우러진 형형색색의 문양은 우아한 매력을 더해준다. 은은한 풀 향기와 매끄러운 광택은 자연의 청취를 고스란히 전해주며, 질기고 단단한 특성 덕분에 오랫동안 사용할 수 있는 내구성도 자랑한다.
“시간이 흐를수록 완초공예품의 빛깔은 깊어집니다. 반질반질한 윤기는 여전해 황금빛으로 일렁이고,. 형태는 세월의 멋을 고스란히 간직하죠.”
Yu Seon-ok makes efforts to preserve tradition. After she was recognized as a successor trainer in 2004, she has been actively involved in preserving tradition by training future generations at the Ganghwa Hwamunseok Culture Hall. In 2024, she was designated as a National Intangible Heritage Holder, succeeding her husband, which deepened her sense of responsibility and mission. She is currently focused on creating new works for an exhibition and plans to widely promote the beauty and value of sedge crafts through the upcoming National Intangible Heritage Exhibition and the Incheon Intangible Cultural Heritage Public Event.
유선옥 보유자는 전통을 보존하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 특히 2004년에 전승교육사로 인정받은 후 강화화문석문화관에서 후배 양성에 힘쓰며 전통 보존에 앞장서 왔다. 2024년에는 남편의 뒤를 이어 국가무형유산 보유자로 지정되면서 그 책임과 사명을 더 깊게 새기게 됐다. 현재는 전시회를 위한 신작 제작에 몰두하고 있으며, 곧 열릴 국가무형유산 보유자 작품전과 인천시 무형문화유산 공개 행사를 통해 완초공예의 아름다움과 가치를 널리 알릴 예정이다.
