The excavation survey of cultural heritage for the development of Geomdan New Town showed that the site is home to a large pre-historic residential area during the bronze age as well as the residential sites dates back from the Neolithic era to the Joseon Dynasty, along with tombs and kilns, of which the historic values are immense.

The city has been proceeding with the construction of a new museum, in preparation for the increase of new residences and the demands for culture due to the development of Geomdan New Town Museum, in addition, to serve the needs for abase for more stability in the preservation, study, and exhibition of the cultural heritage excavated from the site.

Geomdan area is home to the existing Geomdan Prehistory Museum (open in 2008, gross floor area 1970m2). However, since the existing museum was too small, there have been calls for expansion. Once the new Geomdan New Town Museum is completed, the existing prehistoric museum is planned to be relocated and merged with the new Geomdan New Town Museum.

Now that the project passed the preliminary public museum feasibility assessment, which will give the project more momentum, the project will start with an international call for a design proposal in the first half of 2022, followed by the groundbreaking in 2023 and completion of construction and opening by 2025.
