Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Yoo Jung-bok) has announced that it will extend the operation of the current demand-responsive bus (I-MOD) service in Geomdan  New Town until December, in conjunction with the opening of the Geomdan Extension Line (June 28), to improve public transportation convenience for early residents.

The demand-responsive bus (I-MOD) is a customized transportation service that allows users to select their departure and destination bus stops via an app, call for a bus, and have the operating platform calculate the optimal route to send a vehicle to the designated stop, enabling swift transportation to the destination.

Considering the initial difficulties in using public transportation in the Geomdan  New Town, Incheon City introduced this service in September 2021 and has been operating it since then. Although the service was originally planned to be operated on a temporary basis until June 28, the opening date of the Geomdan Extension Line, the decision to extend the service was made in response to residents' demand for subway use and the need to improve accessibility to subway stations.

However, the MODU buses (45-seater) that previously operated to Gyeongyang Station for commuter support will cease operations by June in accordance with the opening of theGeomdan  Extension Line, while the demand-responsive buses (16-seater) will increase their fleet from four to six vehicles.

The costs for the additional extension will be jointly borne by the Incheon Urban Development Corporation (IH) and the Korea Land Housing Corporation (LH), which are the project implementers for the Geomdan  residential development project. Operating hours will be from 6:00 AM to 8:30 AM and from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM during peak commuting hours. Four I-MOD buses will be deployed around the Geomdan  Extension Line stations, while the remaining two will continue to operate within the Geumdan New Town for internal transportation support.

The operating routes were initially determined through consultations between Incheon Urban Development Corporation, the platform operator, and transportation service providers. The routes will be flexibly adjusted in the future based on resident feedback.

Kim In-soo, Director of the Transportation Bureau, stated, “The additional extension of the demand-responsive bus (I-MOD) service will significantly improve the commuting and daily mobility convenience of residents in the Geomdan  New Town. We will continue to actively reflect residents’ diverse opinions to enhance transportation welfare for citizens.”
