- Real-time analysis guides safe evacuation, reducing average evacuation time by 17% -

Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok) announced the completion of its ‘AI-Based Evacuation Guidance System for Multi-Use Facilities’ to support citizens' swift and safe evacuation during emergencies like subway fires. A completion briefing was held at Gyesan Station on January 15.
This completion briefing marked the conclusion of the system expansion project, which has been underway since March 2025 and covers 18 stations on Incheon Subway Line 1. Approximately 30 attendees were present, including the Director of the Incheon Metropolitan City Planning and Coordination Office, representatives from the Incheon Fire Department Headquarters, and the Incheon Transportation Corporation.
The event proceeded in the following order: ▲ Project completion report ▲ System operation and on-site demonstration ▲ Q&A session. Attendees directly observed the operation process of the evacuation guidance system on-site, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to provide real-time guidance on the optimal evacuation route upon fire detection.
The AI-based evacuation guidance system for multi-use facilities is an advanced safety system that analyzes the location and spread direction of heat and smoke during a fire to avoid hazardous zones and guide citizens to safe and swift evacuation routes.
Following the launch of pilot projects at Incheon City Hall Station and Incheon Terminal Station in 2023, Incheon Metropolitan City completed the installation of a total of 935 units across 17 types of equipment at 18 stations along the complex and high-traffic Incheon Subway Line 1 last year.
Furthermore, to verify the system's reliability and performance, it underwent official testing by the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA). A simulated fire drill conducted at Gyeongin National University of Education Station last December confirmed an average evacuation time reduction of approximately 17%.
Shin Seung-yeol, Director of the City's Planning and Coordination Office, stated, “This system implementation will be a significant turning point in elevating the safety standards for citizens using the Incheon Subway.” He added, “We will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies, including the Fire Department and the Transportation Corporation, to ensure that advanced AI technology becomes a robust safety net protecting citizens' precious lives, striving our utmost to realize a smart safe city.”
