Incheon Hit by Up to 139mm of Rain—40 Reports of Flooded Roads and Homes
Heavy rain of up to 139mm fell in Incheon from last night through early this morning, causing flooding of roads and homes as well as landslide damage.
As of 7:30 a.m. on the 20th, Incheon City said a total of 40 rain-related damage reports had been received by the city and local district offices.
A heavy rain warning was issued for Incheon at 4:40 a.m. today, and more rain with thunder and lightning is forecast through tomorrow.
Basic Subway Fare in Greater Seoul to Increase from First Train on June 28
Incheon Metropolitan City announced that the basic subway fare in the Greater Seoul area will increase starting from the first train on June 28.
With the regional integrated transfer discount system applied, the adult transportation card fare will rise by 150 won—from 1,400 won to 1,550 won. This adjustment will apply across all metropolitan subway lines, including those in Incheon, Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and lines operated by the Korea Railroad Corporation.
Incheon plans to use the additional funds mainly to improve transportation safety and convenience for citizens. The city will also work on increasing operating income and cutting transportation costs to gradually improve its financial balance in this sector.
Incheon Expands Cultural Understanding Through Sharing with Multicultural Families
Incheon Metropolitan City announced that it held a “Communication and Sharing with Multicultural Families” event yesterday at the Gyeyang-gu Family Center, together with the Incheon Women’s Association and the Gyeyang-gu Family Center.
This event was part of a project funded by the city’s Gender Equality Fund. It aimed to support multicultural families in settling into the local community and to promote mutual understanding and cultural awareness through exchanges with women’s groups.
Participants made traditional food together, shared it, and had meaningful time learning about and connecting with each other’s cultures in a natural setting.
Incheon Announces Results of 2025 Old Photo Collection Event
Incheon Metropolitan City announced today the results of the “2025 Incheon Old Photo Collection Event” hosted by the city.
The event was held from March 18 under the theme “Recalling Incheon’s Past Through Citizens’ Memories.” It collected photos taken between 1971 and 1999, including scenes like honeymoons in Incheon, school trips to the city, and old neighborhood landscapes where people once lived.
From the photos submitted, the city plans to select those with high value as landscape records, enhance their quality through digital editing, and officially register them as landscape archives.
Incheon Releases 700,000 Young Blue Crabs into the Sea near Eulwang
Incheon’s Fisheries Resources Research Institute has released 700,000 young blue crabs into the waters near Eulwang in Jung-gu to help restore local crab populations.
These crabs, which hatched in mid-May, are healthy and over 1cm in size, having passed disease screening.
It usually takes 1 to 2 years for them to grow into adults, and they are expected to help increase fishermen’s income starting as early as next spring.
Island Visitors to Incheon Increase by 23% from January to May
Thanks to the “Incheon I-Sea Pass” program, which lowered ferry ticket prices to city bus fare levels, more people are visiting Incheon’s islands.
Between January and May this year, 293,994 people used local ferries—an increase of 23.4% compared to the same period last year.
Among them, Incheon residents made up the majority with 250,984 users, more than five times the number of people from other regions (43,010).
Incheon Pushes to Restart UNESCO Geopark Designation for Baengnyeong and Daecheong
Incheon is working to restart the process of designating Baengnyeong and Daecheong as a UNESCO Global Geopark, which was halted after North Korea objected.
The city is now in close talks with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Unification, and the Ministry of Environment to find a diplomatic solution.
North Korea officially sent a written objection to UNESCO on May 19.
Incheon responded the same day, asking UNESCO’s secretariat for detailed reasons and also contacted the Korean mission to UNESCO, awaiting their reply.
Multiple Bills Submitted to Bring Maritime Court to Incheon
Several lawmakers have submitted bills to establish a special maritime court in Incheon—a long-held goal for the region.
So far, 32 lawmakers from various parties (17 from the Democratic Party, 14 from the People Power Party, and 1 from the Reform Party) have supported the legislation.
The proposed bills would amend laws to officially designate Incheon as the location of the maritime court and define its jurisdiction and authority.
An Incheon city official said they will work closely with politicians, the legal sector, and the public to make this happen.
