Long-Abandoned and Moored Vessels Worsen Marine Pollution — Coast Guard Strengthens Management

The Korea Coast Guard conducted a nationwide inspection in May and June to strengthen the management of abandoned and moored vessels. The survey identified 451 vessels across the country as vulnerable to marine pollution—specifically, those over 20 tons that had not operated for more than six months or showed visible signs of pollution risk.

Following the survey, 21 21 regional Coast Guard offices removed 201 tons of residual oil from high-risk vessels and carried out 775 patrols to prevent marine pollution.

The Coast Guard plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to develop safety measures, including the disposal of 19 vessels classified as high-risk.
