Incheon Nat’l University and Berkeley Lab Uncover New Light-Emission Mechanism in Semiconductor Defects
A joint research team from Incheon National University and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has, for the first time, identified a mechanism that allows hidden defects in semiconductors, previously believed incapable of emitting light, to stably release photons.
The breakthrough challenges conventional semiconductor physics and could accelerate the commercialization of silicon-based quantum communication and quantum computing technologies.
The study was led by Professor Lee Young-hoon of Incheon National University's Department of Electrical Engineering, in collaboration with Dr. Liang Z. Tan of Berkeley Lab, Professor Lee Ki-hoon of the Department of Physics, and Professor Kang Young-ho of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
The findings were published in the June issue of the international journal Nano Letters under the title, “Radiative Electronic Bound States in the Continuum from Defects in Semiconductors” and were selected as a supplementary cover article in recognition of their originality.
