Women's Representation in Incheon Politics Rises, But Challenges Remain

A local women's organization says female representation in Incheon’s local councils increased significantly in the June 3 local elections, but structural barriers still remain.

According to an analysis by the Incheon Gender Equality Policy Research Institute of Korea Women’s Human Rights Plus, 75 women were elected to local councils in Incheon, including 59 first-time lawmakers.

Women won 16 seats in the Incheon Metropolitan Council, accounting for 35.6 percent of all seats, which was more than double the 17.5 percent recorded in the previous local elections.

The number of female district council members also rose from 50 to 58, including, for the first time, two women in their 20s elected to district councils.

Coast Guard Launches Safety Campaign for Coastal Foraging Enthusiasts

The Central Regional Coast Guard Headquarters has launched a short-video relay campaign promoting key safety guidelines for people who enjoy coastal foraging, known in Korea as haerujil.

The campaign slogan derives from the first syllables of three essential safety rules.

The first is to return to shore at least one hour before low tide. The second is to always wear a life jacket, and the last is to check sea conditions through the “Hae Road” mobile app.

The Coast Guard hopes the campaign will help prevent accidents and encourage safer marine leisure activities.

Officials urged the public to remember and practice all three safety measures to protect themselves and their families while enjoying coastal recreation.

Incheon Launches High-Resolution Aerial Mapping Project

Incheon Metropolitan City has begun a new project to build advanced spatial information data using high-resolution aerial photography.

The project comes as part of efforts to support smart administrative services and respond proactively to urban changes.

The city has been conducting aerial photography surveys annually since 1985 to document urban development and provide foundational data for administrative planning.

This year, Incheon will invest 340 million won in a six-month project to create a detailed spatial information database and analyze changes across the city.

Beach Season Begins Across Korea as Major Seaside Destinations Open

With another hot summer on the horizon, major beaches across the nation are opening one by one to welcome vacationers.

Following the opening of Ayajin Beach in Goseong, Gangwon Province, on June 12, Eulwangri, Hanagae, and Wangsan beaches in Incheon opened on June 20.

Beaches in Jeju are scheduled to open on June 24, while Busan’s popular Haeundae and Songjeong beaches will welcome visitors starting June 26.

As high fuel prices and a weak won continue to encourage domestic travel, large crowds are expected at beaches during the summer vacation season.

Accordingly, local governments are stepping up efforts to attract visitors and boost regional economies through the busy holiday period.

Incheon Offers Financial Education for North Korean Defectors

Incheon Metropolitan City will conduct a financial literacy program for North Korean defectors on June 24 to help them better understand financial systems and settle more successfully into local communities.

The program will focus on improving participants’ understanding of basic financial concepts and strengthening their ability to recognize and avoid fraud, as there have been growing concerns over financial crimes targeting defectors, including voice phishing scams, investment fraud, and loan-related scams.

The session will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Shinhan Bank’s Incheon Branch Financial Center, with about 20 North Korean defectors expected to participate.
