Incheon Bridge Suicide-Prevention Barrier Project Faces Delays

A project to install safety barriers on the Incheon Bridge is facing delays due to regulatory limitations.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the bridge operator have jointly planned to install safety barriers on the bridge where suicide attempts have occurred repeatedly. However, the project has been unable to proceed as there are currently no design standards for applying such safety devices to bridges without pedestrian walkways.

The ministry had originally planned to install 2.5-meter-high safety barriers along a 7- to 8-kilometer section near the bridge’s main towers, with design work beginning earlier this year and construction scheduled for completion in the second half of the year.

But during consultations, officials found that there are virtually no precedents for installing suicide-prevention facilities on highway bridges, and no suitable standards exist for bridges without sidewalks.

Incheon Launches High-Resolution Aerial Mapping Project

Incheon Metropolitan City has begun a new project to build advanced spatial information data using high-resolution aerial photography.

The project comes as part of efforts to support smart administrative services and respond proactively to urban changes.

The city has been conducting aerial photography surveys annually since 1985 to document urban development and provide foundational data for administrative planning.

This year, Incheon will invest 340 million won in a six-month project to create a detailed spatial information database and analyze changes across the city.

Officials say the project will help improve urban management and support more efficient public services.

Beach Season Begins Across Korea as Major Seaside Destinations Open

With another hot summer on the horizon, major beaches across the nation are opening one by one to welcome vacationers.

Following the opening of Ayajin Beach in Goseong, Gangwon Province, on June 12, Eulwangri, Hanagae, and Wangsan beaches in Incheon opened on June 20.

Beaches in Jeju are scheduled to open on June 24, while Busan’s popular Haeundae and Songjeong beaches will welcome visitors starting June 26.

As high fuel prices and a weak won continue to encourage domestic travel, large crowds are expected at beaches during the summer vacation season.

Accordingly, local governments are stepping up efforts to attract visitors and boost regional economies through the busy holiday period.

Incheon to Launch New ‘Two Counties, Nine Districts’ Administrative System on July 1

Incheon Metropolitan City will hold a public celebration on July 1 to mark the official launch of its new administrative structure, known as the “Two Counties, Nine Districts” system.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. at the Grand Theater of the Incheon Culture & Arts Center and will commemorate the city's first major administrative reorganization in 31 years.

City officials say the reform is designed to better respond to rapidly changing urban conditions and growing administrative demands while strengthening citizen-centered public services.

The city emphasized that the restructuring goes beyond simple administrative boundary adjustments, but represents a broader effort to promote balanced regional development and improve administrative efficiency.
