Incheon Confirms First Japanese Encephalitis Mosquito of the Year
The Incheon Institute of Health and Environment has identified this year’s first Culex tritaeniorhynchus, the primary vector of Japanese encephalitis, after it was collected in Geomdan-gu’s Baekseok-dong last week.
The mosquito was detected two weeks later than last year, and laboratory testing found no trace of the Japanese encephalitis virus, indicating there is currently no risk of disease transmission.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency issued a nationwide Japanese encephalitis advisory on March 20 after the first vector mosquito of the year was found on Jeju Island.
It later upgraded the alert to a warning on June 17 after genetic material from the virus was detected in mosquitoes collected in Daegu.
Popularity of Teach You A Lesson Sparks Interest in Teacher Protection
The growing popularity of the Netflix original series, Teach You A Lesson, has fueled public interest in protecting teachers' rights and ensuring a safe environment for educational activities.
The series features a fictional “Educational Rights Protection Bureau” that responds firmly to violations of teachers' authority and school violence.
In reality, institutional measures to safeguard teachers have also continued to expand. According to the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education, it became the first provincial or metropolitan education office in Korea to establish a superintendent-level Office of Education Protection in January 2024, aimed at creating a safer teaching environment.
The office was launched by integrating the existing Treatment Support Center for Teachers, the Educational Activities Protection Response Team, and the Legal Support Team into a single dedicated organization.
Fire fighters' Daily Donations Help 141 Households
A fundraising campaign launched by firefighters at the Incheon Fire Service Headquarters has raised more than 1.6 billion won.
First launched in August 2019, participants donated 119 won per day to help support victims of accidents.
Over the past seven years, more than 4,500 people have participated in the campaign, including around 2,300 firefighters and the remaining supporters from the general public to collect a total of 1.6047 billion won.
The initiative was proposed by firefighters who regularly respond to emergency scenes. While each participant contributes only 119 won a day, or about 3,570 won – roughly the cost of a cup of coffee per month, the donations have grown into a substantial fund over seven years.
So far, 664.13 million won has been used to support 141 households affected by various accidents.
Incheon Seeks Companies for Pilot Youth Work Experience SSE Program
Incheon Metropolitan City is recruiting companies to participate in a pilot work experience program designed to strengthen local social solidarity economy organizations while providing meaningful job experience for unemployed young people.
The recruitment is intended to match participating companies with 59 young job seekers in the Incheon area who will be selected at a later stage.
Companies will be chosen first, followed by the recruitment and placement of participants.
The city will review applications and conduct eligibility screenings before selecting the final list of participating businesses.
Each selected organization will be assigned up to four youth interns, depending on its size and the quality of its job training plan.
Incheon Saves Electricity Costs Through Data-Driven Water Treatment Plant
The Gongchon Water Treatment Plant under the Incheon Waterworks Headquarters has shared the results of a year-long operation of its pump efficiency monitoring system during a performance review meeting held on July 8.
The facility has been using the system to analyze the operating conditions of water pumps in real time and optimize operations through data-driven management, improving overall efficiency.
The improvements extended beyond pump performance, resulting in lower peak electricity demand, enhanced equipment efficiency through internal pump coating, the establishment of a data-based operational management system, and strengthened staff training and operational expertise.
