When people hear the name Incheon, they usually think of the airport—a place you pass through on your way somewhere else. I used to think the same. But after living here as an international student, I have realized that Incheon is much more than that. Somewhere along the way, it stopped feeling like a temporary stop and started feeling like home.
인천이라고 하면 대부분 공항을 먼저 떠올린다. 여행을 위해 잠시 스쳐 지나는 도시라고 생각하는 사람도 많다. 나 역시 그랬다. 하지만 유학생으로 이곳에서 생활하며 인천은 단순한 경유지가 아니라는 사실을 알게 되었다. 어느새 이곳은 잠시 머무는 도시가 아니라, 나에게 ‘집’ 같은 곳이 되었다.
Adjusting to a new country does not happen overnight. Instead, little things slowly add up: finally remembering which bus to take, recognizing your favorite coffee shop, or seeing a local vendor smile because they know you. Looking back, those small moments are what made me feel that I belonged here.
새로운 나라에 적응하는 일은 하루아침에 이루어지지 않는다. 대신 작은 순간이 하나둘 쌓여간다. 자주 타는 버스 노선을 외우게 되고, 단골 카페가 생기고, 시장 상인이 나를 알아보며 미소를 건네는 순간들. 돌아보면 그런 소소한 일상이야말로 내가 이곳에 속해 있다는 마음을 갖게 해주었다.
One thing I am especially grateful for is the range of activities my university organizes for international students. Whenever I had the chance, I signed up. One experience I will always remember was a traditional doll-making workshop. We spent the afternoon creating tiny figures dressed in hanbok, carefully folding fabric and assembling every detail. The workshop was held in a room high above the city, with enormous windows overlooking Incheon. Every now and then, I would look up from my project and see the skyline stretching into the distance. It was one of those quiet moments when everything simply felt right. Experiences like that reminded me that adjusting to a new country does not have to be something you do alone. Sometimes all you need is a welcoming community, a fun activity, and a beautiful view.
특히 감사한 것은 학교에서 유학생들을 위해 다양한 프로그램을 마련해 준다는 점이다. 나는 기회가 있을 때마다 빠짐없이 참여하려고 했다. 그중 가장 기억에 남는 것은 전통 인형 만들기 체험이다. 한복을 입은 작은 인형을 만들며 천을 접고 하나하나 손으로 완성해 가는 시간이 무척 즐거웠다. 높은 층에 있는 강의실 창밖으로는 인천의 풍경이 한눈에 펼쳐졌고, 작업을 하다 문득 창밖을 바라볼 때마다 모든 것이 제자리를 찾은 듯한 평온함을 느꼈다. 새로운 나라에 적응하는 과정은 혼자 견뎌야 하는 일이 아니라는 것도 그때 깨달았다. 따뜻한 사람들과 함께하는 작은 경험만으로도 큰 힘을 얻을 수 있었다.
Outside university events, I also enjoyed exploring Incheon on my own. One place that completely amazed me was Aurora at INSPIRE Entertainment Resort. The enormous digital ceiling—with animated forests, waterfalls, and changing skies—felt almost unreal. I remember standing still for several minutes, watching the lights above as everyone else walked by. It did not feel like an entertainment complex so much as stepping inside an art installation.
학교 밖에서도 인천 곳곳을 둘러보는 시간을 즐겼다. 그중 가장 인상 깊었던 곳은 인스파이어 아레나였다. 천장을 가득 채운 초대형 디지털 미디어는 숲과 폭포, 변화하는 하늘을 생생하게 표현하며 마치 다른 세계에 들어온 듯한 느낌을 주었다. 한동안 발걸음을 멈춘 채 천장을 바라보며 시간을 보냈던 기억이 아직도 생생하다. 단순한 공연장이 아니라 하나의 거대한 예술 작품 속에 들어와 있는 듯했다.
Whenever I needed a break from studying, I often found myself at Eurwangni Beach, especially after sunset. There is something incredibly peaceful about standing by the ocean at night, listening to the waves while the city noise fades behind you. It became one of my favorite places to clear my mind, and it is still the first place I recommend to international students looking for a quiet escape.
공부에 지칠 때면 을왕리해변을 자주 찾았다. 특히 해가 진 뒤의 바다는 더욱 특별했다. 파도 소리만 들리는 밤바다에 서 있으면 도시의 소음은 어느새 멀어지고 마음도 차분해졌다. 지금도 조용한 휴식을 원하는 유학생들에게 가장 먼저 추천하고 싶은 장소다.
Another place I grew to love is Songdo Moonlight Festival Park. Even on an ordinary evening, it feels gently alive. Families, couples, and students gather to walk, relax, or simply enjoy the fresh air. The broad lawns, lights reflected on the water, and open spaces reminded me of large parks in American movies, yet the mood felt uniquely Korean—peaceful, relaxed, and never rushed.
또 하나 좋아하게 된 곳은 송도달빛축제공원이다. 특별한 행사가 없는 평범한 저녁에도 공원은 잔잔한 활기로 가득하다. 가족과 연인, 학생들이 산책하고 여유로운 시간을 보내는 모습은 자연스럽게 일상의 풍경이 된다. 넓은 잔디와 수면 위로 비치는 불빛, 시원하게 열린 공간은 미국 영화에서 보던 공원을 떠올리게 했지만, 그 분위기만큼은 한국만의 여유와 편안함을 담고 있었다.
What I appreciate most about Incheon is not any single attraction, but the balance of the city as a whole. It is modern and convenient, with striking buildings, efficient public transportation, and everything needed for daily life. At the same time, nature is always close. Parks sit beside skyscrapers, canals weave through neighborhoods, and the sea is never far away. That blend of city life and tranquil outdoor space made adapting here easier than I expected. Whenever life became overwhelming, there was always somewhere nearby to slow down and breathe.
무엇보다 내가 인천에서 가장 좋아하는 점은 도시 전체의 균형감이다. 현대적인 도시답게 편리한 교통과 생활 인프라를 갖추고 있으면서도 자연이 언제나 가까이에 있다. 높은 건물 곁에는 공원이 있고, 동네 사이로 운하가 흐르며, 바다도 멀지 않다. 도시의 편리함과 자연의 여유가 공존하는 이 환경 덕분에 새로운 삶에도 생각보다 쉽게 적응할 수 있었다. 힘든 날이면 언제든 잠시 걸음을 멈추고 숨을 고를 수 있는 공간이 가까이에 있다는 사실이 큰 위안이 되었다.
Living abroad has taught me that feeling at home is not about how long you have been somewhere. It is about gathering moments that slowly become part of everyday life. For me, those moments were making traditional dolls with classmates, watching digital art above my head, listening to the waves at Eurwangni Beach, and taking evening walks through Songdo. One by one, they transformed Incheon from an unfamiliar city into a place that feels like home. For that, I will always be grateful.
해외에서 생활하며 깨달은 것은 ‘집’이라는 곳은 머문 시간의 길이로 결정되지 않는다는 점이다. 일상 속 작은 순간들이 차곡차곡 쌓일 때 비로소 그곳은 집이 된다. 친구들과 함께 전통 인형을 만들고, 디지털 아트를 올려다보고, 을왕리해변의 파도 소리를 들으며, 저녁 무렵 송도의 거리를 걸었던 시간. 그런 순간들이 하나씩 모여 낯설었던 인천을 내 집 같은 도시로 바꾸어 주었다. 그래서 나는 언제나 인천에 감사한 마음을 간직하고 있다.
