Adapting to Korea

Coming to Korea has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life, but it has also been one of the hardest. Moving from Florida to Korea for college meant leaving behind everything I was familiar with and learning how to build a life in a completely different country. I was excited to experience Korea, but I also knew that I would have to adjust to many new things.

I am a student in my third semester at Mason Korea and my major is Computational & Data Sciences. Last semester, I lived off campus in Bupyeong, which gave me a very different experience from living in a dorm. Since I was about an hour away from Mason Korea, I had to commute to school every day. At first, using public transportation was difficult for me. I had to learn how to navigate buses and trains, figure out which routes to take, and make sure I gave myself enough time to get to class. It could be tiring, especially on days when I had a lot going on at school, but eventually I became more comfortable with it. Looking back, commuting taught me how to become more independent and responsible for myself.

One thing I really enjoy about living in Korea is how easy it is to find things that I like. I love walking around Incheon and discovering new places. There are always new restaurants, cafés, stores, and places to explore. I also really enjoy convenience stores because they are so easy to find and there are so many different foods and snacks to try. Many things are also affordable, which has made everyday life easier for me as a college student.

Of course, there are times when I miss home. Living far away from my family can be difficult, especially when I am having a stressful week or simply want something familiar. At the same time, Korea has made it easier for me to feel comfortable because I have been able to find things that remind me of home while also discovering things that are completely new to me.

The language barrier has probably been one of the biggest challenges. When I first came to Korea, I felt much less comfortable communicating in Korean. Sometimes I would worry about making a mistake or not understanding what someone was saying. Now, I am much more comfortable than I was when I first arrived. I am still learning, but I have realized that I do not have to know everything right away. Sometimes you just have to try, make mistakes, and keep going.

Living in Incheon has also encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone. I have explored different parts of Incheon and Seoul, met new people, and experienced things that I probably would not have experienced if I had stayed in my comfort zone. Every new experience has taught me something about myself and about what it means to live independently.

One of the biggest parts of my life at Mason Korea has been being a member of the dance team, Glo. Dance has always been something important to me, so being able to continue dancing in Korea has made me extremely happy. Being part of Glo has allowed me to meet people, make memories, and share something I love with others. It has also helped Korea feel less unfamiliar because I have a group of people that I can experience things with.

When I think about my experience in Incheon, I think about how much I have changed since I first arrived. I have become more independent, more comfortable trying new things, and more willing to put myself out there. Living here has not always been easy, but I think the difficult moments have made the good ones even more meaningful.

I am still discovering Incheon and Korea, and I know there is so much more for me to experience. What started as moving to another country for college has become an opportunity to learn more about myself, meet new people, and create a life that is my own. I am excited to see where the rest of my journey in Incheon takes me.
