The Office of Waterworks in Incheon Metropolitan City announced on the 8th that the tap water in Incheon acquired the International Standards Organization's Food Safety Management System (ISO 22000) international certification on the 2nd and received the international standard certificate.

The acquisition of ISO 22000 certification means that tap water in Incheon has been internationally admitted for being strictly produced and supplied through systematic hygiene management and food safety management.

Objects that have passed the international hygiene management standards and have obtained ISO 22000 include the entire production and supply of purified water from the intake of the four water purification plants in Incheon (Gongchon, Bupyeong,
Susan, and Namdong water purification plants) and the bottled Michuhol Chammul production facility.

ISO 22000 is a Food Safety Management System developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and it is an international standard that is prescribed to effectively manage the hazards that may occur at each stage such as raw material production, manufacturing, processing, preservation, and distribution of food.

This international standard  certification was made through the British Standards Institution (BSI),  a certification body for food safety management systems related to waterworks, and BSI completed on-site due diligence at four water purification plants last month (including bottled Michuhol water production facilities).

Since December last year, The Office of Waterworks in Incheon Metropolitan City has promoted extensive facility improvements for water purification plants in the city to acquire ISO 22000.

First of all, 12.8 billion won was invested in facilities such as insect control facilities, window replacement, installation of sanitary rooms, sealing by activated carbon paper, and installation of an activated carbon larvae blocking device in preparation for
strict sanitation management required for ISO22000 international certification.

water production facilities in Incheon.

The filter paper painting business and hygiene management improvement project will continue in the future. It plans to continue the filter paper painting business by December this year, and by investing 18.8 billion won in 2022 to improve hygiene management and carry out additional related businesses.

The larvae blocking device installed at the Bupyeong and Gongchon water purification plants for the first time in the country was also well received as a best practice. This  apparatus is installed in the final step of  the water treatment process and has the effect of blocking fine extraneous substance.

In response, Park Namchoon, the mayor of Incheon, said, "The supply of clean tap water that citizens can drink safely is the top priority of waterworks, and all employees made an effort to cut their bones with one mind". And “The acquisition of ISO 22000 certification proves that tap water in Incheon is strictly managed to a safe food level. He said, “We will keep our promises to citizens as we are now so that the citizens can experience better tap water in Incheon.”

▲ Incheon Metropolitan City received the ISO22000 certificate from Song Kyung-soo, BSI (British Standards Institution)
Korea general representative on the 8th.

At the delivery ceremony, Korea general representative Song Kyung-soo promised, “BSI’s auditors, including myself,  to
make efforts to help the Office of Waterworks in Incheon Metropolitan City effectively implement the food safety management system and achieve visible results through periodic follow-up  audits in the future.” And he said, I would like to express my gratitude to those who worked hard to establish a food safety management system and prepare for the examination."

Park Namchoon, mayor of Incheon, received a certificate from BSI (British Standards Institution) Korea General Representative Song Kyung-soo at City Hall on the same day. The delivery ceremony was attended by Shin Eun-ho, chairman of the Incheon Metropolitan City Council, Lim Dong-ju, chairman of the Industrial Economy, and Kim Seon-ja, a member of the Healthy Tap Water Committee.

Meanwhile, the current cases of ISO 22000 certification acquisition are highly advanced water purification plants such as Seoul, Bucheon, Gimhae, and Suncheon in Korea, Osaka, Japan, Agba, Spain, and Melbourne, Australia.
