Incheon City Warns of 'Tick-Borne Diseases' During Chuseok Ancestral Grave Visits and Weeding

The Incheon Metropolitan City Institute of Public Health and Environment has issued a caution regarding tick-borne diseases and urged compliance with preventive measures, as outdoor activities such as grave maintenance and ancestral visits are expected to increase ahead of the Chuseok holiday.

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), a disease transmitted by ticks, is caused by bites from ticks carrying the SFTS virus. Symptoms, including high fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and altered consciousness, typically appear within 14 days after being bitten.

An Incheon City official stated, "It's important to follow preventive measures such as wearing long clothing and using insect repellents to avoid tick bites. After outdoor activities, it's crucial to wash your body and check for any attached ticks." They added, "If you have been bitten by a tick, please visit a health center or medical institution instead of forcibly removing it yourself, as this could lead to secondary infections."

An Incheon City official stated, "We ask citizens to dispose of their waste according to the designated collection days during the holiday period, and especially to refrain from waste disposal on Chuseok day itself."
