Seoul and Gyeonggi Request Extension of Landfill Ban on Municipal Waste to 2030

It has been revealed that Seoul City and Gyeonggi Province have asked the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment to postpone the enforcement of the ban on direct landfilling of municipal waste at the metropolitan landfill site from the originally planned 2026 to 2030—an extension of four years.

According to documents obtained by Rep. Heo Jong-sik of the Democratic Party from the ministry, Seoul and Gyeonggi are seeking the extension due to delays in expanding public waste incineration facilities.

In contrast, Incheon maintains its original position that the ban should be implemented as planned in 2026, even if it requires outsourcing operations to the private sector, which raises the likelihood of conflict among the municipalities.
