Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill in Songdo Retains Five-Star Hotel Rating
Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill has once again been awarded a five-star hotel rating following a recent evaluation conducted by the Korea Hotel Association. The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZ) announced that the hotel earned more than 90 percent of the total 600 points available through a combination of on-site and surprise inspections, securing recertification of its five-star status. Opened in 2015, Gyeongwonjae by Walkerhill is a premium hanok hotel that blends the elegance of traditional Korean architecture with modern hospitality services and has established itself as one of Incheon’s landmark accommodations. An IFEZ official said the authority will continue supporting Gyeongwonjae’s growth as a globally recognized tourism destination that showcases the value of traditional Korean culture while serving as a source of pride for Incheon residents.
Incheon Accelerates Redevelopment Plans for Five Aging Residential Districts
The Incheon Metropolitan Government is stepping up redevelopment efforts in five large residential districts developed during the 1980s and 1990s. The city announced that it is accepting applications through June 1 to designate pilot redevelopment zones in five districts: Guwol, Yeonsu–Seonhak, Mansu 1-3, Galsan–Bupyeong–Bugae, and Gyesan. Following consultations with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Incheon plans to finalize the selection of pilot districts in August. Areas chosen as pilot districts will receive priority in the preparation of special redevelopment plans, allowing projects to move forward more quickly
Incheon Selected for Energy Technology University Project
The Incheon Metropolitan Government has been selected for the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment’s first-round 2026 Energy Workforce Development Program, known as the Energy Technology University (ETU) initiative. The project is a collaborative effort involving universities, research institutions, and local governments to cultivate skilled professionals for the regional energy industry. A total of 21.5 billion won will be invested over six years from 2026 to 2031, including 17 billion won in government funding, and 4.5 billion won in local contributions with Incheon responsible for 1.3 billion won. Training programs will focus on next-generation energy technologies such as renewable energy, including offshore wind power, sector coupling, power systems, and power conversion technologies, with curricula tailored to regional industry needs.
Incheon Records Lowest Fine Dust Levels Since Introduction of Seasonal Management Program
The average concentration of ultrafine dust in Incheon recorded 23.5 micrograms per cubic meter, the lowest level since the implementation of a seasonal fine dust management plan. Incheon Metropolitan City announced that the low ultrafine dust level is the result of the “7th Particulate Matter Management Plan,” which was implemented from December 1 of last year to March 31 of this year, and a decrease of 27 percent from the average 32.2 micrograms recorded during the same period in 2018 before the policy was implemented.
Incheon Leads Tidal Flat Cleanup Effort Ahead of Ocean Day
A tidal flat cleanup campaign has been carried out on May 27 at Sorae Wetland Ecological Park in Namdong-gu to mark the 31st Ocean Day. Ocean Day, observed annually on May 31, was established to highlight the importance of the maritime industry and honor those working in the sector. The date commemorates the founding of Cheonghaejin, the maritime headquarters established by the Unified Silla-era naval commander Jang Bogo. This year’s event was designed to raise awareness of marine environmental conservation and promote cooperation among related organizations in building a sustainable marine ecosystem. More than 150 participants, including officials from the city government, the Incheon Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, the Incheon Coast Guard, and the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, collected marine debris such as discarded plastics from the tidal flats.
